GENERAL SUMMARY: The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinical Research Nurse and Data Management is a specialized nursing role within the Pediatric Clinic. This position combines clinical expertise in pediatric hematology, oncology, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, and infusion therapy with data management responsibilities. The nurse will serve as a primary resource for patient care coordination and data collection for hemophilia and oncology programs, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards, including those set by the Children's Oncology Group (COG) and the Hemophilia Foundation as a local treatment center. Additionally, the role involves active participation in clinical research, ensuring adherence to protocols and regulatory requirements. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of a Manager or designee who reviews work for conformance with standard procedures.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May direct and coordinate the work of professional and ancillary personnel providing Nursing care to patients.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to pediatric patients with hematology and oncology diagnoses, including hemophilia and sickle cell disease.
- Administer infusion therapies, monitor patients during treatment, and respond to adverse reactions or emergencies.
- Educate patients and families about their conditions, treatment plans, and medication management.
- Collaborate with physicians, social workers, and other healthcare team members to create and implement individualized care plans.
- Ensure compliance with standards and requirements set by the Children's Oncology Group (COG) for pediatric oncology patients.
- Maintain adherence to the Hemophilia Foundation's guidelines as a designated local treatment center, including data reporting and care protocols.
- Participate in audits, site visits, and evaluations conducted by COG, the Hemophilia Foundation, or other accrediting organizations.
- Act as a liaison for COG clinical trials, ensuring strict adherence to research protocols and guidelines.
- Coordinate patient enrollment, consent, and follow-up for clinical research studies.
- Maintain current knowledge of clinical trial protocols and regulatory updates.
- Act as the primary contact for scheduling and coordinating patient infusions and follow-up appointments.
- Ensure seamless communication between inpatient and outpatient services.
- Advocate for patients and families, addressing their concerns and facilitating access to resources.
- Collect, analyze, and maintain data related to hemophilia and oncology programs, including COG-required patient data.
- Ensure timely and accurate data reporting to national registries, COG, the Hemophilia Foundation, and other regulatory bodies.
- Monitor program metrics and quality indicators, identifying areas for improvement.
- Generate reports and assist in audits and quality assurance activities.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and clinical discussions.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to team members on best practices in patient care and data management.
- Assist with the development and implementation of policies and protocols related to hematology/oncology care.
- Stay current with advances in pediatric hematology, oncology, and infusion therapy.
- Attend relevant conferences, workshops, and training sessions to enhance clinical and data management skills.
- Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.
Qualifications
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing, bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
- Must obtain BLS certification upon start of position and must maintain certification per AHA guidelines.
- Expertise in administering chemotherapy, blood products, and complex infusions.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills in high-pressure situations.
- Knowledge of professional Nursing theory and practice.
- Clinical competence in applying Nursing techniques to specific needs.
- Preferred experience in the site area.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with patients, physicians, Medical Center personnel, governing agencies, and the general public.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
- Current Michigan licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
- Certification in Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nursing (CPHON).
- Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience in pediatric hematology/oncology nursing or infusion services.
- Experience with compliance requirements for COG and the Hemophilia Foundation preferred.
- Proficiency in data management and familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and clinical databases.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
NOTE: Appointees to this classification may be required to obtain certification as a Clinical Research Associate. Should the certification be required, appointees will be required to obtain such certification within two (2) years from the date that they receive notification that such certification is required. Failure to obtain certification as a Research Associate may result in termination of employment.
