Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Machinist - Entry Level

Compensation:

Position Overview

Provides machining services to all Coherent departments as requested;  Shares responsibility for safe operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment deployed in Coherent Machine Shop;  Responsible for completion of assigned work to customers' satisfaction; Supports installation of new shop equipment as needed;  Supplies technical assistance to customers as necessary;  Responsible for tracking of priority jobs to assure on-time completion per customer requests;  Shares responsibility for shop organization, scheduling and prioritization of work, and customer interactions.

Due to ITAR compliance, this position requires a U.S. citizen, permanent resident alien, or protected individual per 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).

Education & Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • 1 to 3 years as a Machine Shop Apprentice or in Trades Training 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Effectively performs emergency and unscheduled repairs and preventative maintenance tasks per policies and procedures
  • Actively takes part in the Emergency Response Team (ERT), maintaining all required training and medical certifications and responds to incident and/or emergency situations 
  • Responsible for completing maintenance activities on schedule and within quality standards to limit equipment downtime
  • Successfully performs maintenance related activities correlated to the installation of new equipment and process controls 
  • Accurately completes and communicates required documentation of work orders, status updates and service records
  • Directs assigned projects including procurement, installation, renovations, and modifications per PSM compliance standards and within safe work practices
  • Approaches all activities with a "safety first" attitude, keeping work, storage, and supply areas clean and organized

Skills & Other Requirements

  • Must be able to work with a wide variety of materials and tooling using band saws, horizontal saws, lathes, milling machines and a surface grinder
  • Must be able to work with a variety of hand tools including, but not limited to, drills, saws, die grinders
  • Must be customer service oriented
  • Must possess good communication skills
  • Must work interactively with other machinists and in a positive manner
  • Must work a rotating- or off-shift pattern as assigned
  • Must have a high degree of independent action
  • Mandatory overtime may be required
  • Strong background in computers (emails/web based)
  • Master Cam programming/ CAD background 
  • Haas CNC Mill

Working Conditions

  • Supports a 24/7 operation.
  • Regular exposure to dust, fumes, heat, noise and cold
  • Ambient noise from operating machinery, 6-8 hrs daily 

Physical Requirements

  • Standing or sitting up to 12 hours per day (typically 8 hours)
  • Lifting (Medium Work - Exerting 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally)
  • Pushing/Pulling (Medium Work - Exerting 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally)
  • Must be able to climb, bend, reach, push and pull regularly.
  • Must be able to function mentally and physically while wearing safety equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely work on equipment with rotational hazards.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements for required Emergency Response Team participation.

Safety Requirements

All employees must comply with site EHS procedures and Coherent Corporate EHS standards.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

  • Must be able to wear proper PPE including safety glasses, goggle, splash shields, steel toe/metatarsal shoes, long pants, sleeved uniform, and hearing protection.
  • Must be able to wear dust mask, respirator, or supplied air for extended periods.

Medical Screening:

  • Pre-employment PFT and respirator physical
  • Required Annual PFT and respirator physicals

Quality and Environmental Responsibilities

  • Due to inventory quantities of some highly hazardous materials, MPZ is covered by OSHA standard for Process Safety Management, as well as EPA's Risk Management program.  All MPZ personnel are required to understand the importance of following all operating procedures to maintain regulatory compliance with these programs.
  • Due to classification of several process waste streams, DEP standards for Hazardous Waste handling and storage must be followed to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Coherent meets the ISO 9001 quality standards. MPZ employees must understand and follow all applicable Quality Assurance policies and participate in audits to maintain ISO 9001 certification.
  • Failure to follow operating procedures could result in a release of hazardous materials, impacting employees and the environment.
