POSITION SUMMARY:
Marathon Petroleum Company (MPC) is seeking an Electrical Reliability Engineer to support the Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, Texas. This position is responsible for developing and executing plans, programs, and processes to maintain electrical equipment and systems across their lifecycle, reducing safety, environmental, and economic risk and ensuring compliance with applicable electrical codes and standards. The role provides technical support on high-priority reliability and operational issues and partners with cross-functional teams. Candidates should bring experience with industrial electrical systems (preferably refining/petrochemical) and a strong working knowledge of systems up to 15 kV, including electrical safety, hazardous area classification, power distribution/protection, motors/controls, and electrical studies. Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, and API standards are expected. This position reports to the Reliability Manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide technical/troubleshooting assistance in resolving electrical design, operation, and maintenance problems. Have the competency to recognize when other resources are required and be able to get the appropriate parties engaged.
  • Be the champion of electrical safety for the sites.
  • Manage the refinery's electrical equipment preventative and predictive maintenance program. This includes establishing and maintaining equipment asset strategies for electrical infrastructure, such as monitoring plans, PM plans, PdM activities, etc.
  • Provide technical expertise and lead investigations to solve recurring electrical equipment failures, reliability threats, and/or performance issues.
  • Initiate and participate in management of change (MOC) reviews and incident investigations.
  • Develop projects, and concepts for reliability improvement, prepare reports that monitor and track reliability indicators, provide technical resources and training to support our reliability programs.
  • Support refinery turnarounds, including scope development, planning, reviews, material acquisition, and execution of electrical work scopes. Develop and review turnaround worklists for inclusion of compliance-based testing requirements, maintenance activities & repairs, recommended upgrades & replacements, etc. of critical electrical assets.
  • Support factory acceptance testing & site commissioning of electrical projects or major equipment, including during turnarounds.
  • Able to work off-hour duties such as plant shutdowns and routine on-call support.
  • Maintain and manage the plant's electrical model utilizing ETAP software, including management of the plant's electrical equipment arc flash labeling program.
  • Perform and/or review electrical system studies with emphasis on arc-flash analysis, protection and coordination, motor starting, and short circuit studies.
  • Communicate with personnel from different disciplines and grade levels, along with outside resources to obtain needed information or resolve issues.
  • Review design drawings and construction packages for electrical related projects. Participate in technical reviews of vendor equipment drawings.
  • Accountable for management and maintenance of electrical critical equipment list database. Maintain electrical equipment bad actor list.
  • Develop and maintain final relay set points and logic configuration settings for site transmission, substation, and distribution systems.
  • Provide leadership and decision-making skills during turnarounds and unplanned equipment outages regarding repair solutions.
  • Support refinery in high impact unplanned electrical issues as required.
  • Revalidate/write electrical testing procedures, maintenance procedures, QA/QC checklists, etc. to ensure reliability excellence via NETA requirements.
  • Must be able to physically perform the essential job functions including, but not limited, to wearing all required PPE, working at elevated heights, confined space entry, fall protection, and respirator usage.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum (Required) Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering required.

  • Two (2) years or more of experience required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 4 years or more of relevant experience within the refining or petrochemical industry.

SKILLS
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
  • Must have working knowledge of common industry standards, codes and practices such as, National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA electrical codes, state codes, and NFPA 70E.
  • Must have working knowledge of wiring terminology, conduits, and conduit hardware.
  • Must understand electrical drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), ladder logic, and entry level programming.
  • Experience performing electrical power system studies utilizing ETAP modeling.
  • Familiarity with electrical maintenance and troubleshooting practices for industrial electrical applications. Knowledge of electrical distribution and substation design is preferred.
  • Experience with specification, application, and maintenance up to 15kV class electrical equipment.
  • Must have strong initiative, leadership, and collaboration skills, with proactive troubleshooting and strategic/critical thinking to drive effective problem solving.
  • Must be able to function in a team environment and effectively communicate with personnel of all levels and across multiple disciplines to include Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance.
