Job Summary
Work is performed at an entry level class in the Detention Officer series. This position involves entry-level security work in the custody, control and care and welfare of inmates in County detention facilities, for the purpose of becoming an experienced Detention Officer I, which involves initial in-service and on the job training.
Mohave County has a two-phase application process for this position. To be eligible for placement on a hiring register and further consideration, you must successfully complete the application process.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Incumbents will serve a one (1) year probationary period. In an on-the-job learning/training capacity, an employee will assist and perform (as level of understanding and experience increases) in any or all of the examples of work performed by a Detention Officer I. An employee in this class series may receive work assignments in any or all of the following areas; Control, Booking/Release, Medical, Field Training Program, Disciplinary, Classification, Behavior Management, Warrants, Transports, Commissary, Supplies and Pod Management.

Essential Job Functions
  • Observes and monitors activities, cells, day rooms, yards, showers and other areas of the detention facility.
  • Maintains surveillance and maintains chronological logs and records of facility and inmate activity.
  • Performs strip and other searches of inmates and cells for contraband.
  • Controls movement and activities of inmates within the facility. Opens and closes security doors.
  • Performs head counts and lockdowns of inmates.
  • Subdues combative inmates and potential riot situations.
  • Escorts inmates to outside appointments such as court and health related facilities or transports inmates to other detention/correctional facilities.
  • Books and releases prisoners verifying documents for completeness and accuracy. Photographs and fingerprints inmates.
  • Observes inmates in booking and in facility population for signs of under the influence, injury, illness or behavior apart from the norm including potential suicidal tendencies and if warrants, transports to appropriate facility for assistance.
  • Upon completion of technical training, may be detailed to classify inmates for distribution into population ensuring compatibility and safety of facility population and officers.
  • Reviews and investigates infractions committed by inmates in custody and determines proper discipline.
  • Receives, checks and inventories personal property.
  • Escorts and assists medical personnel in medical rounds and appointments and distributes medication as required by medical department.
  • Supervises inmates assigned to work details.
  • Serves meals to inmates. Inventories return of plates and utensils.
  • Delivers and collects incoming and outgoing mail and correspondence screening for contraband.
  • Briefs relieving shift officers.
  • Issues warnings and disciplinary citations and request and grievance report forms to inmates as required.
  • Escorts and controls inmates during video arraignment court appearances.
  • Prepares complete, accurate reports, records and logs.
  • Orders supplies, answers phones or other related clerical duties.
  • Evaluates and arranges special inmate programs was requested; haircuts, substance abuse meetings, books and games.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.

Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or resident alien.
  • High School diploma /GED.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.

SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT
  • Must possess a valid driver's license for operation of motor vehicles on Arizona roads at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position.
  • Provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.
  • Possess the ability to successfully complete psychological, polygraph, health-related and physical agility testing appropriate to law enforcement individuals.
  • Requires successful completion of 40 hours (on-the-job) of detention training prior to occupying a post or position.

  • The safe and effective operation and maintenance of correctional facility equipment to include firearms and restraints.
  • The safe operation and handling of a motor vehicle.
  • Give and receive orders, to follow instructions, and to work as a team member in a structured working environment.
  • Direct the activities of inmates.
  • Comprehend, retain and recall factual information.
  • Maintain a safe, secure correctional facility and enforce the rules and regulations in compliance with federal mandates procedures for the preservation of the rights and safety of inmates and correctional facility personnel.
  • Apply training, experience and common sense to identify potentially dangerous situations, to make effective logical decisions, and to exercise the appropriate measure of tact or force to resolve dangerous or emotionally charged situations with minimum injury to self and others and minimum damage to property involved.
  • Demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice and desire to help when dealing with people.
  • Accept dangers, regimentation, discipline and time demands of correctional facility work.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel, other law enforcement agencies, court personnel, inmate population and the public.
  • Prepare accurate, complete and legible reports and to present detailed, accurate and objective oral statements and responses to questions.
  • Attain proficiency in the use of firearms and restraints.
  • Fulfill physical requirements of work assignments to include maintaining physical conditioning required for performance of work assignments; lifting 25-50 pounds; and confinement to secured areas.
