What does an entry level RF filter design engineer do?

An Entry Level RF Filter Design Engineer assists in designing and testing radio frequency (RF) filters used in wireless communication systems. Their responsibilities include supporting senior engineers in developing filter prototypes, performing simulations, and analyzing test results to ensure the filters meet required specifications. They also help with documentation, troubleshooting, and collaborating with other engineering teams. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a background in electrical engineering and a strong interest in RF technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level RF filter design engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level RF Filter Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, especially RF and microwave theory, typically supported by a related bachelor's degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like ADS (Advanced Design System) or HFSS, and experience with network analyzers and PCB design software, are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this role. These qualifications ensure the engineer can design, test, and optimize high-performance RF filters that meet specific technical requirements in communications and electronics industries.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level RF filter design engineers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level RF Filter Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as understanding complex filter topologies, meeting stringent performance specifications, and learning specialized simulation tools. Additionally, translating theoretical designs into manufacturable products can be demanding due to real-world constraints like component tolerances and PCB layout limitations. To overcome these hurdles, new engineers benefit from seeking mentorship, actively participating in team design reviews, and dedicating time to hands-on prototyping and testing. Collaboration with manufacturing and test engineering teams also helps build a practical understanding that complements theoretical knowledge.

We combine product and technology leadership, systems-level expertise and global manufacturing scale to quickly solve our customers' most complex technical challenges. Qorvo serves multiple high-growth segments of large global markets, including consumer electronics, smart home/IoT, automotive, EVs, battery-powered appliances, network infrastructure, healthcare and aerospace/defense. Visit www.qorvo.com to learn how our innovative team is helping connect, protect and power our planet.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Use manual and automated techniques to characterize RF power amplifier modules using equipment such as signal generators, spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, power meters, and a variety of microwave components.
  • Proactively manage a workload of lab requests in cooperation with a team of other technicians and engineers.
  • Document test procedures and measurement results.
  • Configure test equipment setups for various types of specialized RF test methods given general direction and guidance.
  • Support design and characterization engineers with measurement requests.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain automated test systems.
  • Assemble and modify microelectronic semiconductor devices according to drawings and specifications using small surface mount attachments, working under a microscope.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate degree in technical field or equivalent military training, but previous experience will be considered.
  • 4-6 years of experience in RF test, including power amplifier and semiconductor test in design characterization, board design or production environment.
  • Working knowledge of RF circuits with understanding of parameters such as gain, current, power, noise figure, and linearity.
  • Proficiency in use of automated RF test systems with an understanding of the theory of operation of the equipment within the system.
  • Proficiency in C# and Visual Basic SW languages.
  • Excellent organization skills, plus good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of digital logic to control some interfaces is also required.
  • The successful candidate will be organized, a self-starter, results-oriented, and able to work both as a team member and independently.
  • The candidate does not have to be a programmer, but knowledge of how a software program is written and runs a test program should not be unfamiliar.

Ideal Candidate Should Be Able to:
  • Debug complex electronic systems or individual component problems. This sometimes means figuring out if the root cause of a problem is the hardware or software or figure out if the problem is caused by the device under test or the test system itself.
  • Complete lab requests given a set of instructions about which parts to test, which test systems to use, how to connect the part, and which test plans to run.
  • Understand performance expectations and monitor test results to ensure that the part and test system are functioning as intended.
  • Troubleshoot any issues that occur and escalate any issues that cannot be resolved in a timely manner.
  • Listen carefully to the design and characterization engineers describe a measurement task, write it down clearly, and execute the task carefully and accurately.
  • Report the measurement results in clear verbal and written form, usually including graphs that are clear and make common sense choices for things like scale, font, and meaningful labeling.
  • Be comfortable with using common software tools such as Office, Excel, Word processors as well as able to learn quickly how to use custom software that controls the test equipment.
  • Solder small wires or components using very precise hand tools under a microscope.
  • Use a schematic and layout diagram to locate or place components on a circuit board.
  • Learn and retain a lot of various specs, new test methods, and new software tools. This sometimes means writing documentation to explain to others what you have learned about a new test method or how to properly use a software tool.
  • Work and communicate respectfully and with patience with a wide variety of people when the project team is under pressure to make a deadline.

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship by the Company.
