Job description

About JerseySTEM
All JerseySTEM roles are pro-bono (unpaid) positions.
JerseySTEM is a mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors dedicated to improving access to STEM education and career pathways for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey.
Members contribute their professional skills and leverage their networks in service of the organization's gender-equity agenda.
Membership is a minimum six-month commitment of approximately six flexible hours per week and includes a $100 refundable deposit, returned after six months of active membership. K-12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students are exempt from the deposit.
Overview
This is a pro-bono volunteer position.
JerseySTEM is seeking an AI-Savvy Data Insights Lead to be our technical lead responsible for translating datasets that are accessible by natural language engines to derive summaries, trends, and actions to power our operations. You will replace manual pulling of reports with automated, intelligent agents.
Are you ready to move beyond static dashboards and build a truly "intelligent" nonprofit? JerseySTEM is looking for a visionary member to own our AI-Forward Data Intelligence Stack. You won't just be managing data; you'll be the primary architect and builder of the engine that transforms raw information into automated, predictive, actionable insights to power our remote nonprofit.
Your mission:
  • Transition us from traditional BI to an AI-driven intelligence model used for decision making
  • Deploy AI agents that synthesize datasets into natural language summaries.
  • Build and Lead a lean team of data innovators to scale our impact.

Make an impact with just 6 hours a week!. Help us build a data intelligence stack that doesn't just show us where we've been, but also surfaces where we need to go.
Interested? Let's talk!
Responsibilities
  • Data Validation: Perform high-level checks on AI-generated insights to ensure they align with organizational reality before they are socialized. Maintain the organization's Semantic Layer ensuring that the business definitions used by AI agents align with the actual logic in core systems.
  • Agent Optimization: Collaborate with the Stack Owner to refine prompt logic and data inputs for AI agents, ensuring summaries are accurate, professional, and actionable.
  • Advise Programs, Marketing, and Operations leads on how to frame "business questions" that the data stack can answer. Train members on how to interact with the new "Chat-with-your-Data" interfaces. Implement feedback loops to tune the underlying engine.
  • Storytelling: Convert data patterns into compelling visual or written narratives that support JerseySTEM's

Qualifications
  • AI Logic & Prompt Engineering: Ability to design and iterate on complex prompts to extract structured insights from LLMs. You should understand how to "tune" an AI's persona and logic to match organizational needs.
  • Semantic Data Literacy: Able to define Business Logic or Semantic Layers to ensure that when an AI talks about a metric (like "Active Student"), it matches the actual SQL logic in the warehouse.
  • Storytelling: Ability to take raw data and turn it into a 3-sentence executive brief that answers: What happened? Why does it matter? What should we do?
  • Data Validation: A skeptical mindset toward data. Able to perform QA on automated reports to catch hallucinations or logic errors before they reach stakeholders.
  • Comfortable navigating as a Consumer side of a modern data stack.
  • Comfortable working in a remote, distributed, member-driven environment.
  • Minimum commitment of 6 hours per week.

Requirements
  • Previous experience applying data insights to resource-constrained environments or social impact causes.
  • Active user of Generative AI tools for professional productivity (e.g., ChatGPT Plus, Claude, or Gemini Advanced).
  • Retired professionals or those seeking meaningful pro bono work are welcome.

This is a pro-bono volunteer position.
