Job description

Princeton University Press (PUP) seeks an enthusiastic, inspired, and highly organized professional with at least three years of art or illustrated book publishing experience to be the Art Book Coordinator. This role will be a member of the Editorial department and support the Editor for Art and Architecture through all stages of the life cycle of the book, from concept through post-publication, and take a leadership role in the management and publication of the Press's distinctive and outstanding books in these disciplines.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to market research, coordination and management of peer review, supporting the preparation of manuscripts and accompanying art programs, including managing the request of illustrations and permissions for certain titles. The Art Publications Coordinator is part of the Press's cross-departmental editorial and production art team, and will collaborate regularly with colleagues in production, digital publishing, marketing, and sales. In addition, the Art Book Coordinator will, on occasion, advise other editors and editorial assistants on issues relating to images and permissions.
This is a full-time position with comprehensive and industry-leading benefits that include a focus on wellness. The selected candidate will be able to choose either 100% remote (within the US), hybrid, or full-time in our Princeton, NJ office.
Core Responsibilities:
Provide the following support for the Editor of Art and Architecture:
  • Take a central and collaborative role in the day-to-day management of the Editor's list and gain essential and detailed experience on all aspects of editorial and other processes involved in art and architectural publishing.
  • Assist in the acquisition, development, and publishing of distinctive and outstanding trade and academic books, both those signed and developed in-house and those co-published with or distributed for partner institutions.
  • Conduct market research using databases such as Bookscan.
  • Oversee and manage peer review at multiple stages of book development.
  • Maintain data integrity for all books on the Editor's list, contributing to the efficient flow of materials and information using the Biblio title management system.
  • Preparation of book budgets and content descriptions for editorial, production, and marketing meetings.
  • Contract preparation and tracking
  • Prepare, circulate, and track jacket copy to authors and publishing partners.
  • Manage pipeline of projects under contract, including regular communication with authors.
  • Liaise with image owners and rights-holders in support of production of certain illustrated books.
  • Evaluate incoming image programs and correspond with authors to ensure production receives suitable files for printing, according to Press guidelines.
  • Transmit completed manuscripts to production.
  • Liaise with translators, as needed.
  • Review frontmatter and jacket proofs prior to printing, and traffic these as needed to authors and publishing partners.
  • Support strategic implementation of E & I goals for the list.
  • Represent the Press at academic conferences, as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between authors and the Press.
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration within the organization and beyond.
  • Contributes to overall publishing operations with new ideas in the dynamic publishing landscape.

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in book publishing, preferably in an editorial role.
  • Experience with highly illustrated art book publishing preferred, but not required.
  • Previous exposure to duties enumerated above.
  • A curiosity for and confidence with illustrated and scholarly book publishing.
  • Experience with text and image permissions.
  • Strong and versatile communication skills as the role entails in-person and in-meeting conversation, as well as multi-format written communication.
  • Capacity for creative problem solving.
  • Demonstrable time-management and organizational skills, and appreciation for detail.
  • Confidence with independent work, and as part of a larger collective with common goals.
  • Advocacy skills.
  • Basic computer skills, including knowledge of Acrobat, Word, and Excel; familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud is preferred (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop).
  • Degree from a four-year college or university preferred but not required, or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience with title management systems (e.g. Biblio) and marketing management systems preferred but not required.
