Hermosa, located approximately 75 miles south-east of Tucson, Arizona, is the only advanced mining project in the United States as of 2023 that could produce two federally designated critical minerals-manganese and zinc-as well as silver and lead. ABOUT THE ROLE 

The Project Engineer provides assurance the construction installation contractors conform to South32 design expectations. Assists in management of all construction activities and skilled, technical, and professional staff are engaged in the construction of process facilities, surface infrastructure, roads, dams, water treatment plants, power infrastructure, maintenance and administrative buildings, and all other onsite and offsite infrastructure. Responsibilities include active interface and management of multiple contractors and subcontractors including planning, scheduling, reporting, health, safety, security, environmental compliance, quality, community relations, and meeting targets within budget and on time. This role is based at the Hermosa Project site, near Patagonia, Arizona.

Other key responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:

  • Compliance and safe practices of construction engineering staff and their teams.
  • Establish and execute the construction engineering program, including the exchange of engineering information among the client, design engineer, and company project team; ensure effective communication and the addressing and tracking of needs, requirements, and issues.
  • Manage the construction engineering department including staffing and supervising the activities and performance of the department; provide guidance to, as well as training and development of, construction engineering personnel.
  • Provide technical support to construction operations and the site quality program; ensure all technical aspects of construction are satisfied.
  • Ensure that project construction activities and services are executed in conformity with S32's environmental and community relations policies and plans.
  • Assist with the preparation of Sourcing Strategies for major works packages as required.
  • Assist with preparation of annual budgets with input and assistance from the Project Controls Team.
  • Review project construction schedules.
  • Assist with timely submission of contractor progress and cost status reports to the Project Controls Team.
  • Assist with implementation of remedial recovery action as required.
  • Ensure strict compliance with S32 Change Management processes.
  • Ensure timely delivery of project construction services to internal stakeholders. 
  • Coordinate construction contractor risk assessments with input and assistance from the S32 Risk Specialist, S32 Engineering Department, Consultants, internal stakeholders and the S32 Construction Team.
  • Coordinate Vendors required of Construction and Commissioning contractors. 
  • Coordinate any work inputs from S32 Site Services.
  • Work with Project Services to ensure that equipment and material deliveries are coordinated and ensure that Care & Preservation requirements are correctly implemented and documented.
  • Coordinate the preparation and revision of technical work procedures consistent with project design and construction requirements.
  • Participate in pre-construction planning efforts during the design and development phases of projects, including the coordination and implementation of the constructability review program, HAZOPs, and development of commissioning program.
  • Analyse situations, identify and forecast pertinent problems and evaluate realistic options; and recommend/implement appropriate course of action.
  • Oversee the issue of equipment and bulk materials to Contractors.
  • Periodically review the Construction Management Execution Plan to ensure conformity with current requirements and revise as required.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory and building code requirements including Federal, State, and Local.
  • Ensure conformity with industry codes of practice and standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Package Manager.


ABOUT YOU 

You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technical Degree (Construction or Similar) and appropriate Trade qualifications.
  • Minimum 6 years of large-scale mining construction site management experience across all trades;
  • Visible field safety leadership and an ability to drive safety and performance excellence
  • Knowledge of engineering, construction and trade practices
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools used to track cost, time and quality
  • Strong and effective communication and engagement skills
  • Relationship building skills: demonstrated empathy, rapport, emotional intelligence and cross-cultural effectiveness with the ability to achieve consensus and build alignment cooperatively
  • Experience with Building Information Management systems;
  • Demonstrated experience implementing Environmental Compliance obligations.
  • Drive company vehicle and be covered under company insurance
