How much do entry level pediatric medical coder jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for entry level pediatric medical coder in the United States is $22.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How to become a clinical coder with no experience?

Entry level pediatric medical coders can start by completing a medical coding training program or certification, such as CPC or CCS, which provides foundational knowledge. Gaining familiarity with coding software and medical terminology, along with internships or volunteer work, can help build experience for those new to the field.

Are medical coders going to be replaced by AI?

Entry level pediatric medical coders perform tasks that require understanding medical terminology and coding guidelines, which currently cannot be fully replaced by AI. While automation tools and AI assist with coding accuracy and efficiency, human oversight remains essential for complex cases and compliance, making the role resilient to complete automation in the near term.

Can I get a job as a medical coder with no experience?

Entry level pediatric medical coders can often find positions without prior experience if they have completed relevant training or certification, such as the CPC credential. Employers may provide on-the-job training, but having knowledge of medical terminology, coding guidelines, and coding software improves job prospects.

What pays more, CCS or CPC?

For entry level pediatric medical coders, Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credentials generally lead to higher salaries than Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credentials, as CCS is often associated with hospital coding and more complex cases. However, salaries can vary based on experience, location, and employer, with CCS holders typically earning a premium due to the specialized nature of their certification.
