Job description

We are seeking a dependable and motivated Shop Helper to support our metal fabrication and machine shop operations. This position will work alongside machinists, millwrights, fabricators, and other shop personnel to assist with material preparation, tool organization, shop support, and general tasks that help keep work moving safely and efficiently.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, mechanically inclined, organized, and comfortable working in an active industrial shop environment. Previous experience in a job shop, machine shop, fabrication facility, or similar manufacturing environment is preferred, but we are also open to candidates with relevant hands-on experience and a willingness to learn.

We are looking for someone who takes pride in being dependable, helpful, and productive. A successful Shop Helper will be willing to learn, take direction from experienced tradespeople, anticipate what is needed to keep jobs moving, and contribute wherever they can make the shop more organized and efficient.

This position is a great opportunity for someone with hands-on or entry-level manufacturing experience who wants to gain broader exposure to machining, metal fabrication, millwright work, and industrial shop operations.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist machinists, millwrights, fabricators, and other shop personnel with day-to-day production and project needs.
  • Gather, organize, stage, and return tools, equipment, and materials needed for shop work.
  • Prepare raw materials and workpieces for machining, fabrication, assembly, or other operations.
  • Assist with basic material handling, including moving, staging, loading, and unloading raw metal stock and finished components.
  • Operate basic hand and power tools as qualified and directed, which may include grinders, saws, drills, and similar shop equipment.
  • Assist with basic deburring, grinding, cleaning, and preparation of metal parts and materials.
  • Help maintain organized tool, material, and work areas to improve shop efficiency and workflow.
  • Assist with inventorying, locating, and organizing commonly used tools, supplies, and shop materials.
  • Perform general shop cleanup and housekeeping to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Assist with forklift and material-handling activities if trained and authorized.
  • Follow established safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify and communicate material, tooling, or supply needs to appropriate shop personnel.
  • Perform other general shop duties and support tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a machine shop, metal fabrication shop, job shop, manufacturing facility, industrial environment, or similar hands-on setting is preferred.
  • Familiarity with common hand tools and power tools.
  • Experience with or exposure to grinders, saws, and other basic metalworking equipment is preferred.
  • Basic familiarity with measuring tools, such as tape measures, calipers, micrometers, or similar equipment, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with raw metal stock, including plate, sheet, bar, tube, pipe, or structural materials, is a plus.
  • Forklift experience or certification is preferred but not required. Training may be provided as appropriate.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to safely prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced shop environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and willingness to assist wherever needed.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements

This is an active, hands-on position in a working metal fabrication and machine shop. Candidates must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive physical tasks.
  • Safely lift, carry, and maneuver materials, tools, and equipment consistent with the requirements of the position, with appropriate assistance or material-handling equipment when needed.
  • Work safely around operating machinery, forklifts, metalworking equipment, noise, and other conditions typical of an industrial shop environment.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and follow all established shop safety procedures.
