Job description

Brown and Caldwell (BC), a national environmental engineering firm, has a new opportunity for aย Structural Engineerย to provide project leadership and technical proficiency to deliver high quality designs for a portfolio of clients. We are seeking a motivated and achievement-oriented individual to take ownership of the structural design on projects and be accountable for the delivery of the project structural team.

The Structural Engineering role will take on more complex tasks in structural drawings and specifications, ensuring accuracy and adherence to project requirements. The role will conduct structural analysis and design for various building components, utilizing software tools and engineering principles. The role will include performing thorough investigations of existing conditions and preparing detailed reports with recommendations. The role will actively engage in cross-discipline coordination meetings to resolve design conflicts and ensure cohesive project delivery.

Responsibilitiesย 

  • Perform structural analysis and design of concrete, steel, and masonry structures.
  • Conduct existing conditions investigation and prepare associated reports.
  • Prepare structural drawings and structural specifications in compliance with building codes.
  • Engage in cross-discipline coordination with different teams for project execution.
  • Provide construction phase support including shop drawing reviews, RFI responses, etc.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Mentorship

  • May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.

Skills and Competencies

  • Intermediate proficiency in structural analysis, design and detailing of concrete, steel and masonry.
  • Possess a working knowledge of the latest building codes and regulations, including: ACI 318, ACI 350, AISC 360, IBC, and ASCE 7.
  • Capability to investigate existing conditions and prepare precise reports.
  • Proficient in the use of structural analysis and design software (RISA or STAAD).
  • Possess a basic understanding of water treatment processes.

Experience

  • Typically, a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in structural engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in structural design and understanding construction processes in detail.
  • Proven track record of dealing with shop drawings and responding to RFI's in a construction setting.
  • Has passed or is working towards passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam required for Engineer in Training registration.
  • Typically will become certified in BC's Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) Framework and progress through the SMS competencies.

Preferred Experience

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in structural engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge of concrete, steel, masonry and wood structural design per IBC and referenced standards.
  • Knowledge in seismic design of structures using various code analysis procedures.
  • Experience with plants, ports and heavy civil/structural projects.
  • Experience with ASCE 41.
  • Structural design experience with wastewater treatment plant or industrial facilities preferred; commercial design experience is a plus.
  • PE license or actively working towards same.

Education

  • A bachelorโ€™s degree in civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering or equivalent relevant experience is required.

Preferred Education

  • A master's degree in Civil Engineering (structural course work emphasis).

Salary Range:ย Theย anticipatedย starting payย range for this position is based on the employeeโ€™s primary work location and mayย beย more or lessย dependingย upon skills, experience,ย and education.ย  These ranges may be modified in the future.ย ย 

Location A: $78,000 - $106,000
Location B: $85,000 - $116,000
Location C: $93,000 - $127,000
