BWXT Nuclear Operations Group, Inc. is seeking a Mechanical, Aerospace, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineer to join the Design Engineering team in the Thermal/Hydraulic Design group. BWXT provides safe and effective nuclear solutions for national security, clean energy, environmental remediation, nuclear medicine, and space exploration. We are the sole manufacturer of naval nuclear reactors for U.S. submarines and aircraft carriers. BWXT has 12 major operating sites in the U.S. and Canada.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Perform thermal-hydraulic design evaluations including: steady-state and transient analysis of recirculating steam generators, two-phase flow and heat transfer analysis, incompressible/compressible flow network analysis, heat exchanger design and optimization, steam drum design, multi-phase separator design, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling using STAR CCM and ANSYS FLUENT.
  • Perform maintenance and development of in-house fluid dynamic and heat transfer analysis software in FORTRAN, Visual Basic, VBA, PYTHON, C++, etc.
  • Interface with steam/water separation equipment through support of development activities including testing and analysis.
  • Work with large data sets to infer trends and improve analysis techniques.
  • Work with other design and manufacturing engineers in development of design of components to be manufactured by BWXT Nuclear Operations Group.
  • Review fabrication drawings to ensure they satisfy functional design requirements.
  • Communicate information and status orally and in written form. Document analysis by compiling a technical report that documents analysis, results, and conclusions and compile a calculation file detailing the analysis.
  • Develop summary presentations on analysis results applicable to a wide variety of intended audiences.
  • The selected candidate will work in a team comprising of thermal/hydraulic, structural, manufacturing, welding, project and QA engineers to evaluate and optimize pressure vessel designs.
  • The candidate will also be working closely with manufacturing and project engineers to resolve fabrication related issues.
  • Opportunity for a variety of mechanical engineering analysis assisting other groups within Design Engineering, including structural design/stress analysis such as: linear elastic sizing, fatigue, elastic-plastic, fracture mechanics, shock and vibration, thermal/mechanical, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ABAQUS or ANSYS.

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in a Mechanical Engineering, or similar. A bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering will also be considered.
  • Knowledge of single-and two-phase fluid flow and heat transfer analysis tools and methods, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

  • Entry level role, less than 1 years of experience required.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and retain a DOE clearance.
