General Description

An Asphalt Plant Operator, who works under the direct supervision and leadership of the Asphalt Plant Foreman and/or Asphalt Plant Superintendent, is responsible for start-up and operation of assigned hot mix asphalt mixing plant(s).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plant Operation & Production: Operate computerized controls to manufacture asphalt to specifications, regulating conveyors, bins, and pumps.
  • Material and Quality Control: Ensure proper mixture temperatures and proportions, collaborating with Quality Control (QC) to adjust blends.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform, as needed, inspections, maintenance, and repairs of conveyors, shakers, and plant machinery, under the supervision of the Asphalt Plant Foreman and/or Asphalt Plant Superintendent.
  • Routine Servicing: Perform daily preventive maintenance, including checking oil levels, lubricating moving parts (such as bearings and conveyors), and cleaning the plant and yard facility.
  • Troubleshooting: Under the supervision of the Asphalt Plant Foreman and/or Asphalt Plant Superintendent, diagnose equipment malfunctions and assist with implementation of corrective actions to minimize plant downtime during high-production periods.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to OSHA and/or MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) and company standards to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Loadout and Logistics: Manage the loading of hot mix asphalt into haul trucks and issue delivery tickets.
  • Inventory Control: Monitor inventory levels of raw materials (aggregates, liquid asphalt).
  • Site Security: Manage visitor check-ins and ensure the plant is properly shut down and locked out during stoppages to prevent unauthorized access or accidents.
  • Record Keeping: Complete production reports and documentation.

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

  • Mix Design Specifications: Ability to interpret and apply specific mix designs to ensure the final product meets project-specific standards.
  • Materials Handling: Knowledge of different aggregate types, liquid asphalt binders, and recycled materials.
  • Asphalt Production Processes: Deep understanding of hot mix asphalt (HMA) production, including how to batch, crush, and segregate materials.
  • Computerized System Operation: Proficiency in using specialized computerized control systems to regulate material flow, speeds, and temperatures.
  • Mechanical & Electrical Maintenance: Skill in performing preventive maintenance and troubleshooting, including basic welding (arc welder/cutting torch) and electronic diagnostics.
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Ability to operate loaders, skid steers, and other heavy mobile equipment used in the yard.
  • Mathematical Proficiency: Skill in performing basic math calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and utilizing software like Excel for reporting.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Working knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations regarding safety and environmental standards
  • Attention to Detail: Necessary for monitoring gauges and dials to ensure conformance to strict processing specifications.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Resourcefulness and adaptability to handle unexpected challenges like equipment malfunctions or material inconsistencies.
  • Safety Orientation: Constant mental and visual alertness to maintain a safe work environment for all personnel.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Ability to effectively coordinate with quality control staff, road crews, and truck drivers.
  • Must be willing to work occasional Nights and Weekends.

Education and Experience. This position typically is not an entry-level job, as it requires previous experience as an Asphalt Plant Operator.

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years or more of industry related experience is required for this position, with an emphasis on Asphalt Plant Operations.

Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an Asphalt Plant Operator to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Routinely work a shift of 8-10 hours/per day, including occasional nights and/or weekends.
  • Occasionally utilize stairs and/or ladders, using 3 points of contact, to access various working/walking platforms, including the operator control office.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull, periodically at least 25 pounds; occasionally, up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to pass a health respirator medical assessment and periodically wear a facemask/respirator, in accordance with OSHA requirements.
  • Periodically work at heights, greater than 6', utilizing provided fall protection equipment/personal protective equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks in an efficient manner.
  • Potential limited exposure to dust, dirt grease and noise; ability to wear personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hardhat, fall protection and/or respirator, where applicable.
  • Periodically walk and/or stand, for short periods of time, on various terrain, including sand, gravel, pavement and dirt.

Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that an Asphalt Plant Operator encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Work is primarily performed, from an enclosed, climate controlled office, however occasional need to perform maintenance and inspections, in various weather conditions.
  • Work environment may periodically expose individual to various levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a plant; either engineering controls and/or personal protective equipment is required, to ensure exposure limit does not exceed OSHA specifications.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve exposure to a variety of substances commonly found on asphalt and plant sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline and diesel fuel; however, no levels above OSHA Permissible exposure limit.
