Description
The George R. Farmer, Jr. Law Library at West Virginia University College of Law seeks applicants for the position of Reference and Student Engagement Librarian. This is a library faculty appointment with rank leading to promotion in an academic research-oriented environment. The George R. Farmer, Jr. Law Library has a collection of over 60,000 titles and serves the research needs of the West Virginia University College of Law, the University community, the local bench and bar, and the public.
The Reference and Student Engagement Librarian develops and coordinates programs and services to enrich the law student experience, promotes library services through student programming and events, and serves as liaison to the West Virginia Law Review, the Moot Court Board and other student organizations at the law school. Programming will include but is not limited to instructional programs and may be developed in collaboration with law school units outside of the library such as the Meredith Center for Career Services and Professional Development and Academic Excellence Center. In addition, the Reference and Student Engagement Librarian periodically assesses students' research needs and satisfaction with library services. Ultimately, this librarian is tasked with leading the charge to further develop library services for students that make the library an essential part of law student success.
The Reference and Student Engagement Librarian will provide reference assistance and design and deliver legal research instruction in law courses in varied formats. This librarian also teaches credit bearing courses in the College of Law curriculum. The course package may vary from semester to semester however, it is anticipated that they will teach Introduction to Legal Research and one other course each year which may include an Advanced Legal Research class. Other teaching interests are welcomed and may be considered based on the needs of the College of Law curriculum.
This is an entry level librarian role. This position reports to the Director of the Law Library.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • J.D. from an accredited ABA Law School
  • Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution, or enrollment in such a program
  • A thorough understanding of legal systems and legal research principles, and familiarity with the use of legal research databases such as Westlaw, Lexis, HeinOnline, and others.
    MS Office skills
  • Strong and effective interpersonal, oral and written communication, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with faculty, students, and staff
  • Strong service orientation with the ability to provide exceptional service to a diverse clientele
  • Creative capacity to foster and manage change
  • Demonstrated ability to meet West Virginia University Libraries promotion and peer review standards in librarianship, professional development and/or research, and service

Salary: Starting at $75,000 per year, commensurate with directly related education and experience
