Job description

Business Intelligence & Analytics Analyst

About University of Massachusetts Amherst Foundation

Established in 2003, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Foundation (UMAF), a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, exists to raise philanthropic funds in support of the University of Massachusetts Amherstโ€™s mission and highest aspirations. Located on the Amherst campus and wholly dedicated to supporting the Universityโ€™s mission, UMAF is a separately governed nonprofit organization with its own health, wellness, and retirement benefits. UMAF serves the University of Massachusetts Amherst community by serving as a best practices resource for fundraising strategy and implementation.

About the role

The BI & Analytics Analyst sits within the Advancement Operations division and reports directly to the AVP of Advancement Operations. This is a handsโ€‘on individual contributor role responsible for building, maintaining, and improving UMAF's reporting and data assets.

The Analyst works primarily in Tableau and Snowflake, building dashboards and reports that give advancement staff and leadership reliable, reconciled data. They contribute to a selfโ€‘serve reporting environment by supporting data documentation and data quality work across the team.

This role is a good fit for someone who cares about getting numbers right, can trace a figure back to its source, and finds satisfaction in turning messy data into something a nonโ€‘technical person can act on. The right candidate asks "what are we actually trying to understand?" before writing the first query. They use AI tools as a natural part of their workflow, document as they go, and donโ€™t stop at the surface answer when something doesnโ€™t add up.

Advancement domain knowledge is useful but not required โ€” strong analytical habits and business curiosity travel well across industries.

Location

This is a fullโ€‘time hybrid position and is open to employees in select US states: Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New Hampshire.

What you'll do
  • Builds and maintains Tableau dashboards and reports supporting fundraising performance, donor engagement, and advancement operations tracking.
  • Prepares ad hoc data pulls and analysis in response to requests from advancement staff and leadership.
  • Validates and reconciles report outputs against trusted data sources before delivery.
  • Designs visualizations that are clear and actionable for nonโ€‘technical audiences.
Data Analysis & Quality (30%)
  • Writes SQL queries in Snowflake to extract, transform, and analyze advancement data.
  • Identifies and documents data quality issues, working with team members and data stewards to resolve them.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of Snowflake reporting views used across the teamโ€™s reporting stack.
  • Participates in reconciliation processes that verify key metrics against authoritative sources.
Documentation & Selfโ€‘Serve Support (25%)
  • Contributes to UMAF's data dictionary and documentation library, keeping field definitions and reporting logic current.
  • Documents query logic and dashboard methodology so others can understand and reproduce the work.
  • Supports the development of UMAX (Salesforce Education Cloud) reporting resources and endโ€‘user guides.
  • Assists with training and support for advancement staff using selfโ€‘serve reporting tools.
  • Uses AI tools to accelerate analysis, draft documentation, and explore data questions โ€” and shares that fluency with the team.
Other Duties as Assigned (10%)

UMAF is building and growing, and this position will support those efforts with other duties and projects as assigned from time to time.

Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree in data analytics, computer science, statistics, business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience building Tableau dashboards or comparable data visualization tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated commitment to data accuracy.
  • Investigative mindset โ€” follows a data question until the underlying logic is understood, and flags when a number warrants a closer look.
  • Demonstrated habit of documenting query logic and methodology so others can trace and reproduce the work.
  • Active user of AI tools (such as Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or Cortex) as part of analytical and documentation workflows.
  • Ability to communicate analytical findings clearly to nonโ€‘technical audiences.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • High degree of integrity, demonstrating respect for individuals at every level of an organization.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
Preferred
  • Experience with Snowflake or other cloud data warehouse platforms.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or advancement/fundraising CRM systems.
  • Experience in higher education, nonprofit fundraising, or a missionโ€‘driven organization. Domain knowledge in advancement is a plus; strong analytical instincts and documentation habits are weighted more heavily.
  • Experience writing technical documentation or contributing to a data dictionary.
  • Familiarity with ETL concepts and data pipeline basics.

  • 20 vacation days, 12 holidays, 12 sick days, 5 personal days, and 2 office closure days.
  • 401(k) plan. You contribute 5% and receive a 10% match.
  • Health insurance packages for medical, dental, and vision.
  • 16 weeks of paid parental leave to use within 1 year of childbirth. An additional 6 weeks available for the birthing parent. Partโ€‘time work for fullโ€‘time pay for the first 4 weeks post parental leave.
Proposed Annual Salary Range:
