Entry Level Heat Transfer Engineer information

What does an entry level heat transfer engineer do?

An Entry Level Heat Transfer Engineer assists in designing, analyzing, and optimizing systems that involve the transfer of heat, such as heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. They work under the supervision of senior engineers to conduct calculations, run simulations, and prepare technical reports. Their responsibilities may include supporting the development of heat exchangers, thermal systems for electronics, or energy-efficient building solutions. They also help with testing prototypes, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level heat transfer engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Heat Transfer Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering with coursework in thermodynamics and heat transfer, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software such as ANSYS, MATLAB, or COMSOL, and a basic understanding of CAD tools, is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in this role. These competencies enable accurate design, analysis, and collaboration, which are essential for solving complex thermal challenges and supporting engineering projects.

What are some typical projects or tasks that entry level heat transfer engineers handle during their first year on the job?

As an Entry Level Heat Transfer Engineer, you can expect to assist with tasks such as conducting thermal analyses, supporting the design and testing of heat exchangers, and creating or updating simulation models. You'll likely work closely with senior engineers and multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot issues, interpret test results, and help prepare technical documentation. These hands-on experiences not only build your technical skills but also give you insight into industry-specific standards and collaborative project workflows.

Job description

VPE Thermal, a subsidiary of Vacuum Process Engineering, is a world-renowned leader in microchannel heat exchanger design and manufacturing. Our company serves a wide range of industries with commercial products including power generation, chemical processing, oil/gas, nuclear and renewable energy with state-of-the-art heat exchangers. In addition to commercial products, we maintain a strong culture of internal R&D with exciting projects using cutting edge manufacturing technology and design/analysis tools to invent the heat exchangers of tomorrow. Our current team at VPE Thermal is offering an opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer with a strong background in manufacturing to join a rapidly growing company with significant career advancement opportunities. As an addition to the team, you will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field with decades of experience and draw on your own background to contribute to projects that result in hardware that will go into service.

Job Description:

As an experienced mechanical engineer at VPE Thermal, your primary role will revolve around taking high-level engineering designs from a senior engineer after a customer PO has been issued and produce the documentation required to convert into hardware. You will oversee the work of draftsmen and be responsible for reviewing and approving their work with detailed understanding of the ASME BPVC, customer design specifications, and manufacturing processes. You will be required to interface with procurement to disseminate BOMs for establishing project budgets and approving purchase orders from engineering requirement perspective. You will be responsible for meeting with production to issue the design package for manufacturing and collaborating on build sequence and traveler generation. Your engineering knowledge of the product will be critical to solving problems encountered during production on the shop floor to keep projects moving forward including NC closure, repair/rework instructions, and identifying root cause. On any day you may be asked to generate detailed engineering drawings, perform code calculations, document design information in a report, develop a manufacturing plan, procure items in a bill of materials, contract work with an outside shop, or anything in between.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from accredited four-year college or university
  • More than four years working in high paced manufacturing environment
  • Course work in solid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics
  • Computer aided design (CAD) from construction of a 3D model to detailed engineering drawings
  • Document manufacturing plans, work instructions, design information, and research findings
  • Basic project management including quoting, scheduling, budgeting, and execution
  • Interpret and deliver products adhering to customer design specifications
  • Manufacturing processes including cutting, milling, forming, and welding of stainless steel
  • Basic project management including quoting, scheduling, budgeting, and execution
