Job description

Health Information Management Specialist

Under the supervision of the Mallard Site Manager, the Health Information Management Specialist is responsible for processing patient health information in a timely, accurate manner. Assists the Mallard Site Manager in coordinating and updating all necessary processes required by the HIM Department. Responsible for the timely and accurate processing of patient health information records and ensuring the release of such information in accordance with applicable laws.

Duties Performed:

  • Assembles and processes patient health information records according to NHFHS guidelines/protocols.
  • Ensures all releases of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, company policy, HIPAA, and HITECH regulations, as well as other applicable state and Federal laws.
  • Accurately completes yearly updates to the NHFHS HIM Procedure Manual.
  • Assists the Mallard Site Manager with HIM staff training and delegation of job duties for the HIM team.
  • Answers telephone and responds appropriately to medical staff or any other authorized parties.
  • Classify, audit and organize medical reports.
  • Retrieves health information documents for patients/nurses/physicians.
  • Ensures medical charts are signed in and out appropriately.
  • Provides assistance to other medical records personnel and outlying departments.
  • Audits medical records for missing or incorrect labeling.
  • Notes documentation deficiencies and routes to the appropriate provider.
  • Identify health information reports and ensure their timely upload into patient health records and correct labeling.
  • Complete required health information tasks (buckets) in the electronic medical record system.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate degree in Health Information Management required.
  • Experience: Completion of a Medical Terminology Course required. Or three (3) years of experience in a medical office setting preferred.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
