Entry Level Graduate Structural Engineer information
What is the difference between Entry Level Graduate Structural Engineer vs Junior Structural Engineer?
| Aspect | Entry Level Graduate Structural Engineer | Junior Structural Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifications | Typically a recent civil or structural engineering graduate, pursuing licensure | Likely has some work experience, possibly working towards professional engineer (PE) licensure |
| Work Environment | Training-focused, supervised projects, entry-level tasks | More independent responsibilities, assisting senior engineers |
| Industry Usage | Commonly used for new graduates entering the field | Used for early-career engineers with some experience |
While both roles involve structural design and analysis, the Entry Level Graduate Structural Engineer is typically a recent graduate starting their career, often in a training or mentorship program. The Junior Structural Engineer usually has some practical experience and takes on more independent tasks, preparing for full licensure and increased responsibilities.

Next Lives at the University of Cincinnati
Founded in 1819, the University of Cincinnati ranks among the nation’s best urban public research universities. Home to more than 53,600 students, 12,000 faculty and staff, and over 360,000 living alumni, UC, a Carnegie 1 institution, combines research prowess with a physical setting The New York Times has called “the most ambitious campus design program in the country." UC's momentum has never been stronger as the anchor of the Cincinnati Innovation District, the oldest cooperative education (co-op) program in the country with students earning $94 million annually through paid experiences, an academic health system, and as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The university contributes $10.6 billion in economic impact to the city and $22.7 billion to the state of Ohio. At UC, next is all of us. Learn more at uc.edu.
UC is a mission-driven organization where we are committed to student success and positively transforming the community through scholarship and service. We thrive on innovation, making an impact, and fostering an environment where staff and faculty are key contributors to UC’s success.
The Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management (CAECM) Department consists of 21 full-time faculty, 3 full-time staff and 2 part-time staff, and houses three accredited undergraduate programs with mandatory co-op: Architectural Engineering (234 students), Civil Engineering (399 students), and Construction Management (412 students). The CAECM Department also houses the Civil Engineering M.Eng., M.S., and Ph.D. graduate programs, as well as the Architectural Engineering M.Eng. program, with 85 graduate students across programs. The Department has strong educational and research programs in structural engineering, building systems, construction engineering, transportation systems and infrastructure, and geotechnical and pavement engineering. More information about the department can be found at https://ceas.uc.edu/caecm.
The Civil Engineering program at UC serves a large and diverse undergraduate population and is supported by approximately 12 full-time faculty members with expertise spanning structural engineering, transportation, geotechnical engineering, construction engineering, and materials. The structural engineering area is a core strength of the civil engineering program, with active engagement in teaching, research, and industry collaboration. The structural engineering faculty teach courses to students in all three undergraduate programs. These faculty are actively engaged in technical committees within AISC, ACI, and PCI with strong ties to industry. UC’s Civil Engineering program houses active student chapters for ASCE and the Structural Engineers Association of Ohio. Our ASCE student chapter consistently receives national recognition and ranks highly in regional student competitions.
