What is the difference between Entry Level Flight Dynamics Engineer vs Flight Test Engineer?

AspectEntry Level Flight Dynamics EngineerFlight Test Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Aerospace, Mechanical, or related engineering; basic knowledge of flight dynamicsBachelor's or higher in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering; experience with flight testing
Work EnvironmentDesign, simulation, and analysis in labs or officesOn aircraft or test ranges during flight testing
Industry UsageDesign and analysis of aircraft stability and controlConducting and overseeing flight tests to validate aircraft performance

Entry Level Flight Dynamics Engineers focus on designing and analyzing aircraft stability using simulations, while Flight Test Engineers conduct actual flight tests to validate these designs. Both roles require aerospace engineering backgrounds but differ in their primary activities and work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Flight Dynamics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Flight Dynamics Engineer, a solid understanding of aerospace engineering principles, mathematics, and physics is essential, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software (such as MATLAB/Simulink), computational tools, and industry standards is important, and knowledge of programming languages like Python or C++ is often advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help individuals collaborate within multidisciplinary teams and address complex technical challenges. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and performance of aerospace vehicles in a highly technical and regulated environment.

What are some typical projects or tasks an Entry Level Flight Dynamics Engineer can expect to work on during their first year?

As an Entry Level Flight Dynamics Engineer, you can expect to be involved in tasks such as assisting with the analysis of aircraft or spacecraft trajectories, supporting simulation and modeling activities, and participating in the preparation of technical reports. You might also work closely with senior engineers to perform stability and control assessments, contribute to flight test planning, and help troubleshoot issues identified during design or testing. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—including aerodynamics, controls, and systems engineers—is common, providing valuable exposure to how different specialties work together to ensure the safety and performance of aerospace vehicles.

What does an Entry Level Flight Dynamics Engineer do?

An Entry Level Flight Dynamics Engineer assists in analyzing and predicting the behavior of aircraft and spacecraft during flight. Their responsibilities typically include supporting the design and simulation of flight paths, stability, and control systems. They work with senior engineers to perform calculations, run simulations, and interpret data to ensure safe and efficient vehicle performance. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a background in aerospace or mechanical engineering.

Job description

We are looking for a talented System Performance and Emissions Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Diagnose and resolve thermal and fluid system issues by identifying root causes and delivering data-driven corrective actions that improve product performance and reliability.
  • Own problem resolution for moderately complex components and systems, ensuring issues are fully investigated, documented, and closed with lasting solutions.
  • Leverage advanced simulation, calibration, and analysis tools (e.g., GT-Suite, Fluent, CDAT, Calterm) to generate insights that guide design improvements and decision-making.
  • Strengthen engineering execution by applying and improving core processes (PPP, PPT, VPI/VPC, ESW, FEP) to enhance quality, consistency, and speed.
  • Influence project outcomes by collaborating across teams and translating technical findings into clear recommendations for design optimization and feasibility decisions.
  • Drive project momentum through sound day-to-day decisions on testing, analysis, and stakeholder communication that keep programs on track.
  • Build team capability by coordinating technicians or junior resources and contributing to shared goals through effective collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Grow into a trusted technical contributor by independently executing work, improving processes, and expanding expertise in thermal and fluid sciences.
Cummins is an equal opportunity employer. Our policy is to provide equal employment opportunities to all qualified persons without regard to race, sex, color, disability, national origin, age, religion, union affiliation, sexual orientation, veteran status, citizenship, gender identity, or other status protected by law.

Additional Information:

This role is exempt and candidates must have 2+ years of experience

The Engineer will support engine testing and system performance optimization for future products, with a primary focus on emissions control systems, emissions diagnostics calibration, and test cell execution.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in engine, energy conversion systems, or aftertreatment testing, analysis, or modeling (internships, co-ops, coursework, hands-on projects or research experience acceptable).
  • Solid foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and combustion processes.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams and communicate technical results clearly.
  • Working knowledge or exposure to at least one of the following:
    • Simulation: GT Suite, Boost, Fluent, Converge
    • Data & Analysis: MATLAB, Excel

Compensation:

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate's qualifications and experience, where appropriate.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Build deep technical mastery in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics so you can confidently predict system behavior and guide engineering decisions.
  • Use modeling, simulation, and statistical analysis to turn complex data into clear insights that drive design improvements and validate performance.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate failure modes by understanding system interactions, ensuring strong product reliability and reduced risk.
  • Apply disciplined, data-driven problem solving to identify root causes, implement robust solutions, and prevent recurrence while protecting the customer.
  • Translate stakeholder needs into clear, traceable system requirements and manage them throughout the product lifecycle to ensure alignment and success.
  • Think in systems by understanding interactions across components, controls, and environments to optimize overall system performance-not just individual parts.
