To thrive as an Entry Level Farm Accountant, you need a solid understanding of basic accounting principles, bookkeeping, and familiarity with agricultural business practices, usually supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Proficiency with accounting software like QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and sometimes specialized farm management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are soft skills that help in managing records and collaborating with farm operators. These skills are essential for ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and supporting sound decision-making on the farm.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level professionals in farm accounting roles?

Entry-level farm accountants often encounter the challenge of learning specialized agricultural accounting systems and understanding farm-specific financial cycles, such as managing crop and livestock inventories or seasonal cash flows. They may also need to quickly become familiar with industry regulations, government subsidy programs, and unique tax considerations for agriculture. Collaboration with farm managers and field staff is essential, which requires strong communication skills to accurately collect and interpret operational data for financial reporting. Over time, these experiences offer valuable opportunities for professional growth and a deeper understanding of agribusiness finance.

Job description

Overview:
Waterfield Technologies Inc, (WTI) in partnership with KMD is looking for full-time workers, interested in pursuing a career in freshwater aquaculture with an interest in sustainable food production. WTI is an agricultural production, service, sales, and research company that focuses specifically on aquaculture, hydroponics, and all the systems that interconnect these two production methods.
The current production focus is on breeding multitrophic aquaculture seed (fry) for sale. Research focuses on key new production techniques, systems, and genetic advancements that improve yields and productivity across a variety of domestic and international aquaculture systems. Fundamentally, WTI works at the intersection of animals, plants, and bacterial communities that all must work together for consistent operations as well as optimized yields and profits.
The Company is currently focused on work with Tilapia, but will be adding fresh-water Crustaceans and Mollusks over time.  The Company has been operating since 1993, and has used 46+ generations of continuous genetic improvements to support aquaculture producers in lowering their production costs via improved growth rates and better feed efficiency while maintaining disease resistance and robustness.

  • Assist Operations Manager in general tasks, supplies procurement, and some production data entry.
  • Some light office filing of bills/invoices both on office computers and file cabinets, digitizing records.
  • General software updates, as needed.
  • Assist CEO in certain business administration tasks.
  • Handle aquaculture compliance (USDA/FDCAS) licenses, permitting.
  • Support General Manager in export compliance, export readiness.

Requirements:
  • Strong familiarity with QuickBooks online, aptitude to learn and improve existing systems, templates.

  • Highly organized.
  • Comfortable with new challenges outside of normal areas of experience, can-do attitude.
  • Willingness and eagerness to learn any of above/below areas if not directly familiar.
  • A plus; strong Spanish language skills.

Job specifics:
  • Entry-level pay scale, with the opportunity to grow with a rapidly growing company.
  • Standard benefits include paid vacations, paid sick days, wellness bonus.
