What does an entry level electrical engineer do?

An entry-level engineer performs a variety of tasks as part of their job. In this career, your main duties are to design, build, and test electronics, electrical systems, and electrical equipment, such as electric motors or navigation systems. Some electrical engineers design new industrial products, while others work on improving existing systems of products. You are responsible for creating all the standards and specifications, such as manufacturing blueprints, which the production staff reads and carries out. You also ensure that all systems or products meet safety and design standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Electrical Engineer, you need a solid grasp of electrical engineering fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD), circuit simulation programs, and industry standards, as well as an EIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification, is often expected. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you contribute effectively to projects and collaborate with diverse teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering accurate engineering solutions, meeting project requirements, and supporting professional growth within the field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an entry level electrical engineer expect during their first year on the job?

As an Entry Level Electrical Engineer, you'll often assist with designing electrical systems, drafting technical documents, and conducting tests under the supervision of senior engineers. You'll likely work on project teams, contributing to tasks such as circuit design, schematic reviews, and troubleshooting. Early responsibilities typically include supporting senior staff, learning company standards, and participating in client meetings or site visits. This hands-on experience helps new engineers develop practical skills and gain exposure to various aspects of electrical engineering projects.

Electrical Engineer Job Description

Objectives:

Do you want to serve a higher purpose?

Are you looking for a career and not just another job?

The people at Industrial Scientific are making a difference. We believe that great people working with great tools in a supportive environment will deliver better products and services and do their best work for our customers. Our leaders understand the critical elements of breakthrough performance: bringing out the best in people; creating a climate of trust, openness and high performance; fostering candor and initiative; and treating people fairly and with dignity. Industrial Scientific provides the environment, leadership, and support that enable employees to exceed their career expectations.

Industrial Scientific's product development team includes skilled engineers, designers and technicians in the disciplines of electrical, mechanical, and firmware engineering.  Third-party design partners are used (both locally and abroad) to augment our in-house team or to provide specific expertise. For the most part, we build what we design - often in our modern manufacturing factory right here in Western Pennsylvania.

We design and develop a wide variety of world-class gas detection instruments, sensors, accessories, and infrastructure for worker connectivity and remote management. Our designs include the latest mixed-signal embedded computing technology, mechanical packaging, miniaturization, and compelling user interfaces.  We partner with a dedicated in-house application software team to provide feature-rich web-based applications that help our customers keep their workers safe.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This entry-level Electrical Engineer position supports the design, development, verification, and sustaining of electrical hardware for Industrial Scientific gas detection products. The role is intended for a recent graduate or early-career engineer who will work under the guidance of experienced engineers while gaining hands-on experience with analog and digital circuits, embedded hardware, PCB design, product testing, agency approval requirements, and cross-functional product development.

This position supports detailed electrical design activities throughout the Product Development lifecycle. This position may occasionally be involved in Enhancement & Sustaining projects for ISC legacy products. This position is expected to work closely with various cross-functional groups to fully assure a properly designed product from concept to production.

The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the design of analog and digital hardware to receive agency approvals (UL, CSA, ATEX, IEC, MSHA, etc.)
  • Assist in developing and verifying electrical element-level specifications and requirements
  • Develop technical design documentation with guidance
  • Support troubleshooting of new and legacy designs
  • Follow the corporate engineering processes and contribute improvement ideas
  • Prepare and present materials for design reviews with guidance from senior engineers to champion design for manufacturability, reliability and serviceability
  • Support legacy product upgrades and sustaining engineering activities
  • Participate collaboratively in cross-functional product development teams
  • Support collaboration with quality assurance during product testing.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum BSEE from an accredited engineering college or university
  • Recent graduate or expected graduate in 2026
  • Coursework, internship, co-op, or project experience with analog circuit design
  • Familiarity with digital hardware design and microcontrollers
  • Exposure to schematic capture and PCB layout tools; Altium experience preferred
  • Demonstrated analytical skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team while also meeting individual responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Up to 2 years of circuit design experience through internship, co-op, academic, or professional work
  • RF design and/or wireless technology integration
  • Battery technologies
  • Embedded programming
  • Spice circuit simulation and signal integrity

Soft Skills:

  • Able to work effectively in a formal product development team environment
  • Able to exercise independent, sound judgment and decision making
  • Able to commit to and work under deadlines
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Collaborate with third-party and offshore development teams when needed
