Electric Distribution Designer (Entry-Level CADD Designer), Texas

Halff is expanding its Electric Power Delivery practice and is looking for entry-level Electric Distribution Designers to join the team in one of our Texas offices. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience in designing both overhead and underground electric distribution lines. This role involves working with co-ops, municipalities, or investor-owned utilities to design new electric distribution lines, relocate and upgrade existing lines, and handle substation distribution takeoffs. The position also offers the chance to broaden your technical skills, mentor junior designers, and contribute to improving our project execution process. What you will do:
  • Developing designs, construction packages, and bills of material for increasingly complex distribution line projects, and offering engineering support throughout the entire project life cycle, from initial concept to construction and final as-built documentation.
  • Conducting on-site visits as needed to determine routes, stake locations, assess right-of-way requirements, perform locates, and identify all existing conditions before starting design work.
  • Serves as the main customer contact during the work management process by handling customer phone calls and emails. Responsible for updating the tracking system as needed.
  • Create, edit, analyze and implement gas facility data updates from job construction sketches, as-built sheets, or mobile applications using standardized symbology and data placement business rules, related to civic improvement, rehab or other existing work.
  • Attend preconstruction meetings and address any construction-related issues as they arise.
  • Calculate electric power to determine the capacity and proper sizing of distribution materials and equipment.
  • Create mockups and designs as necessary.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews of personal distribution line designs and construction packages.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and other teams to meet deadlines, support engineering decisions, and work together on projects.
  • Look for ways to improve project execution processes, focusing on safety by design, quality, and consistency.
  • Report daily to the client office or Halff office.
  • Perform any other assigned duties.

What you will need:
  • At least 2 years of experience designing both overhead and underground electric distribution lines is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CAD-based or GIS-based design tools for electric power infrastructure is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, facilitation, team building, and collaboration abilities.
  • Capable of working outdoors for long periods.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with industry codes and standards such as NESC and NEC.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfortable working with clients, management, and design teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal behaviors toward electric utility providers, associates, and customers.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or engineering technology.
  • Experience with Distribution Design Studio (DDS).
  • Understanding of electrical theory and power calculation methods.
  • Experience with design and construction standards and requirements.
  • Skilled in performing structural calculations, including guying and cable pulling.
  • Capable of completing sag and tension calculations to ensure correct line clearance and installation tension.
  • Proficient in conducting distribution pole loading analyses for proper pole sizing.
