Job description

Cramer Fish Sciences is seeking a full-time Data Steward Technician to join our team in West Sacramento, CA to support data stewardship activities. This entry-level role is ideal for recent graduates with a strong interest in data management within biological or environmental sciences. The Data Steward Technician will assist in collecting, organizing, and maintaining high-quality datasets while working under the guidance of Data Stewards and project leads.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in collecting, organizing, and managing high-quality datasets from field, laboratory, and modeling projects
  • Perform data entry, formatting, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) following established protocols
  • Support data tracking, processing, and archiving within project-specific or organizational databases
  • Assist in maintaining relational databases (e.g., Django, Access, SQL) and spreadsheets for data storage and reporting
  • Generate basic data summaries, tables, and figures using Excel, R, Python, or comparable software tools
  • Assist Data Stewards to ensure consistent data structure, metadata documentation, and file version control
  • Support the preparation of datasets for submittal to clients or public repositories under guidance from senior staff
  • Maintain organized electronic files and documentation to support data transparency and reproducibility
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of data workflows and internal data management practices.

EDUCATION / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Fisheries, or a closely related biological or data-focused field
  • Experience with databases, data processing workflows, and QA/QC procedures preferred
  • Experience preparing graphical data representations and performing basic statistical analysis desirable

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to perform computerized data management in an office environment

COMPENSATION

$24.00 – $30.00/hour depending upon experience. Final compensation at Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) is determined based on internal equity, relevant qualifications and experience, and market considerations.

BENEFITS

401(k) has a 3% match and full vesting after one year. The annual cash bonus has a 3% target. The benefit package includes medical, dental, vision, basic life, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance programs, paid time off, paid company holidays, and other various voluntary benefits.

ESOP

CFS is a 100% employee-owned company. Our employee stock option plan (ESOP) is a qualified defined contribution plan. Our target ESOP contribution is 5%. Eligibility is after one year of service with an entry date of Jan 1 or July 1.
