A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL (DSP) / CAREGIVER
As an Direct Support Professional (DSP) / Caregiver, you provide hands-on care to individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities and help them to live as independently as possible. You assist with activities of daily living such as bathing, meal preparation, feeding, restroom assistance, and medication administration. Helping our residents feel at home, you create a warm, caring environment by assisting with housekeeping, laundry, and grocery shopping. You also enjoy accompanying them on local community outings.
You build strong relationships with each client and find success in their successes. And, you are sure to maintain accurate documentation of progress. By providing individualized attention, you are able to encourage each individual's ability to maintain the highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being.
With each client, you are sure to maintain their comfort, privacy, and dignity in the delivery of services.
This job may not always be easy, but you find the work of supporting people with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities to live amazing lives according to their own needs and desires extremely rewarding!
Experience:
*Previous experience working with adults who have developmental or intellectual disabilities is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record for at least 3 years
  • Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Report, physical exam/TB test and drug test
  • Must have reliable transportation to assigned location
  • Willingness to complete a criminal background check and a child abuse clearance
  • Physical ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Good documentation skills
  • Must have strong written, and verbal communication skills
  • Must attend employee orientation and complete 1 week of mandatory on site training from 9am - 4-5pm.
Requirements

  2. Is knowledgeable of resident rights and ensures an atmosphere which allows for the privacy, dignity and well-being of all individuals served in a safe, secure environment.
  3. Supports, cooperates with, and implements specific procedures and programs for:
    1. Safety, including universal precautions and safe work practices, established fire/safety plans, report and/or correct unsafe working conditions, equipment repair and maintenance needs.
    2. Confidentiality of all data, including individuals served, employee and operations data.
    3. Compliance with all regulatory requirements and agency policies as required by Human Resources, licensing and funding agencies.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with HIPAA standards.
    5. Conducts oneself in a professional manner when representing Indian Creek Foundation.
  4. Functions as a member of the Team:
    1. Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plan and complete job duties with minimal direct supervision, including appropriate judgment.
    2. Uses tactful and appropriate communications in all situations.
    3. Report and follow up regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns with appropriate personnel.
    4. Promotes positive public relations with individuals served, family members, other team members and community.
    5. Completes requirements for training, acceptable attendance, dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.
  5. Complete all documentation to ensure compliance with all regulations and agency policies.
  6. Exhibits behavior as set forth by the Code of Conduct in performance of their duties.
Essential Duties
-Provide quality care to individuals served in an environment which promotes their rights, as illustrated by the following:
  1. Provide individualized attention, which encourages each individual's ability to maintain or attain the highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being.
  2. Maintain the comfort, privacy, and dignity of each individual in the delivery of services to them. Interact with individual in a manner that displays warmth and promotes a caring environment through verbal and nonverbal interactions.
  3. Encourage the growth and development of individuals served including goal achievement
  4. Attend to the personal needs of the individuals which may include assistance with grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinent care, toileting, transferring, ambulation, range of motion, communicating, or other needs in keeping with the individuals' care requirements.
  5. Responsible for promptly reporting and responding to the appropriate personnel incidents or evidence of individual abuse; unusual incidents based on regulations or agency policies; violation of residents' rights.
  6. Provide assistance to individuals using lifts, transfers and safety techniques as required as needed. Must also demonstrate ability to use mechanical lifting devices and follow proper agency lifting procedures.
  7. Must provide medical assistance to individuals served, such as administering medicine, first aid, CPR and/or Heimlich maneuver as trained by the agency. Must also adhere to protocol set forth by the Nursing Department and perform these tasks as trained by Nursing.
  8. Responsible for the general upkeep of the group home including general housekeeping, grocery shopping, meal preparation and/or laundry.
  9. Assist with all work-related transportation duties, which may include transporting individuals served to and from daily activities to medical appointments, on errands related to the group home, and/or on community activities. Must also exhibit the ability to properly handle stressful situations while operating the vehicle.
  10. Perform all job responsibilities in accordance with prescribed safety and infection control procedures including thorough hand washing, use of disposable gloves where indicated, and proper disposal of soiled materials.
  11. Communicate and interact effectively and tactfully with the individual served, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
  12. Participate in regular one-to-one, staff meetings and annual program plan meetings as needed.
  13. Respond appropriately to staff shortages by assisting in other homes programs as assigned.
  14. Complete 24 hours of required training annually.
  15. Completes annual compliance and HIPAA training and exhibits behavior as set forth by the Code of Compliance in the performance of their duties.
Other Duties
  • Assist the immediate supervisor with various tasks to support program and/or department operations as directed; may also be assigned special projects.
  • Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or redesigned based on the needs of individuals served.
  • Attend additional training required by program/department.

All Residential Homes are located with 10-15 mile radius of Souderton, PA. These areas include and not limited to:

Harleysville
Schwenksville
Salfordville
Quakertown
2nd shift:
Tuesday-Friday 2:30pm-11:00pm and Saturdays 9:00am-11:00pm OR
Sundays 9:00am-11:00pm amp; Monday-Thursday 2:30pm-11:00pm
3rd shift: (Experienced DSP's only)
Wednesday-Saturday 11:00pm-9:00am (awake amp; asleep) OR
Sunday-Wednesday 11:00pm-9:00am
PART-TIME
We also have limited part-time schedules available which involve working every Friday, Saturday amp; Sunday. Please inquire about current part time schedules that are subject to change at any time.
