The Scientist, SOM supports the University's research goals and objectives by engaging in complex experiments and investigations in a range of areas, depending on specialty and interests. Moreover, an employee in this position contributes to the scientific community and promotes the University's reputation as a leader in the field.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Oversees research employees, students, and other relevant staff.
2. Authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent applications.
3. Assists in the development of training materials for research staff.
4. Plans experiments and records and analyzes findings.
5. Prepares research proposals and funding applications.
6. Ensures that all activities are in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards.
7. Maintains current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments.
8. Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
9. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
1. Conduct Immunological Research: Perform immunological studies in the context of type 1 diabetes (T1D), infectious disease and at the intersection thereof with particular emphasis on specific T cell immunity.
2. Data Collection and Analysis: Gather and analyze data pertinent to disease pathogenesis and prophylactic or therapeutic interventions, ensuring accuracy and relevance to new and ongoing research projects.
3. Laboratory Maintenance: Support maintenance of laboratory equipment and ensure adherence to safety protocols specific to immunology and microbiology research.
4. Collaborate on Grant Proposals: Work with Principal Investigator to draft, edit and submit grant proposals aimed at securing funding for T1D and related research initiatives.
5. Prepare Research Publications: Contribute to the writing and editing of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, focusing on findings related to immunological processes in autoimmune (T1D) and infectious disease.
6.Coordinate Clinical Samples: Manage the collection and processing of clinical samples, ensuring compliance with ethical standards and protocols.
7. Stay Updated on Research Developments: Continuously review current literature on immunology and T1D to inform and enhance research methodologies.
Department Specific Qualifications
Education:
- PhD and/or MD as well as relevant postdoctoral experience in immunology and related fields (microbiology, molecular biology, pathology, data science).

Experience:
- Extensive prior experience in applied laboratory research, particularly in cellular immunology and diabetes-related studies, as well as familiarity with contemporary single-cell data science is required. Specific experience, knowledge and practical skill sets (experimental design, execution, data management/curation and interpretation) include but are not limited to: high-dimensional (spectral) flow cytometry, multiplex immunostaining, contemporary single-cell technologies ("multi-omics"), microbiology (especially virology), complex mouse husbandry, and handling/processing of murine and human tissues.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques relevant to immunological research.
- Strong analytical skills for data interpretation.
- Excellent organizational abilities to manage multiple research tasks.
- Effective communication skills for collaborative research efforts.
