Position: Test Engineer I – Protection & Control (P&C)
Location: 1810 Congressman Dickinson Dr., Montgomery AL 36109

Duration: 1 Year

Position Overview

The Test Engineer I – Protection & Control (P&C) supports the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protection and control systems used in electrical substations. This entry-level engineering role is ideal for candidates with a strong electrical engineering foundation who are seeking hands-on field and substation experience within a utility environment.

The role requires strong analytical skills, technical aptitude, and a safety-first mindset.

Key Responsibilities

Protection & Control Systems

  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control relaying systems
  • Perform calibration and functional testing of protection relays and associated devices
  • Install and program microprocessor relays and control equipment
  • Support substation protection system monitoring

Technical Equipment Exposure

Work with equipment and systems including:

  • Microprocessor relays (SEL, GE, ABB, etc.)
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
  • Sensors
  • Pumps and motors
  • AC and DC control systems

Field & Project Support

  • Assist assigned project leads with field assignments
  • Support development and maintenance of protection and control documentation
  • Maintain knowledge of current industry trends and best practices

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with safety standards and company policies
  • Support hazard analysis and safe work procedures

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred)
  • 0–3 years of related engineering experience
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
  • Working knowledge of PLCs and HMIs
  • Experience with AC and DC systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Must reside within reasonable commuting distance to assigned APC office location
