Job description

Electrical Engineer II

Job Description

The Electrical Engineer II independently designs, documents, and executes medium- and low-voltage switchgear and power distribution projects from order release through production support. This role interprets customer specifications, develops detailed design deliverables, coordinates closely with engineering and manufacturing teams, and ensures that all projects meet applicable standards and quality requirements. The position suits a proactive engineer who takes ownership of assigned work, maintains high accuracy in design packages, and contributes to continuous improvement in project execution.

Responsibilities

  • Independently design and review electrical power and control systems for medium- and low-voltage (MV/LV) switchgear, including metal-clad and metal-enclosed gear and Power Distribution Centers (PDC).
  • Develop and interpret one-line, three-line, and control schematics to support project requirements and customer specifications.
  • Prepare, review, and update electrical design deliverables, including submittal and construction drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and nameplates.
  • Perform AC and DC load calculations for control power transformers (CPTs) and battery backup systems to ensure reliable and compliant designs.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable industry standards and codes such as UL, IEEE, and NEC, as well as internal company specifications.
  • Analyze customer specifications and compare them against quotations and bills of materials to identify discrepancies, gaps, or potential issues.
  • Participate in internal design review meetings to confirm design completeness, manufacturability, and readiness for release to production.
  • Manage Engineering Changes (ECs), including processing redlines and updating documentation to support timely and accurate project release.
  • Prepare and review submittal and construction packages for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with customer and project requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in engineering and manufacturing to resolve technical issues and support smooth project execution.
  • Apply strong problem-solving skills to address technical challenges and project coordination issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects and tasks, ensuring accountability for quality, schedule, and adherence to design standards.

Essential Skills

  • Strong ability to interpret and develop electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and three-line diagrams.
  • Hands-on experience designing power and control systems for medium- and low-voltage switchgear and power distribution equipment.
  • Working knowledge of protection relays and their application in MV/LV power systems.
  • Working knowledge of utility metering, Modbus communications, and circuit monitoring systems.
  • Proficiency in electrical CAD software with the ability to produce complete, accurate, and well-documented design packages.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and codes such as UL, IEEE, and NEC as they relate to switchgear and power distribution design.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability in technical design and project coordination contexts.
  • Ability to manage Engineering Changes (ECs), redlines, and design documentation updates with strong attention to detail.
  • Proactive mindset with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for assigned work and project outcomes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience creating and reviewing one-line, three-line, and control schematic drawings for MV/LV switchgear and power distribution systems.
  • Experience preparing submittal and construction drawing packages, including bills of materials and nameplates.
  • Experience in electro-mechanical design and integration of electrical components into switchgear and PDC assemblies.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks Electrical or similar electrical CAD tools for schematic and panel layout design.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, and project stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills to handle multiple projects, design changes, and documentation tasks concurrently.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills to document designs and participate in technical discussions and design reviews.

Work Environment

The Electrical Engineer II works in a professional engineering and manufacturing environment focused on medium- and low-voltage switchgear and power distribution solutions. The role involves a combination of office-based design work using electrical CAD and related engineering software, as well as regular collaboration with manufacturing and cross-functional teams to support production and resolve technical issues. The workday typically follows standard business hours, with additional time as needed to meet project deadlines and support critical project milestones. The environment emphasizes accuracy, adherence to industry standards, and teamwork, offering opportunities to work on complex power distribution projects and contribute to continuous improvement in design and execution
