Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group established in 2012, specializes in gas leak detection, corrosion services, damage prevention and underground utility locating services. With a strong emphasis on natural gas infrastructure, Benchmark supports utility companies, municipalities, contractors, and homeowners by providing safe and reliable natural gas leak detection and corrosion services.

Benchmark is seeking qualified technicians to join our team in performing natural gas leak detection surveys and atmospheric corrosion inspections. This role is critical to ensuring the safety and integrity of underground natural gas infrastructure. Technicians will work in the field using specialized equipment to detect leaks, assess corrosion risks, and document findings for utility clients.

The company works diligently to build lasting relationships within the industry. Benchmark’s contracts typically span several years, so providing the highest-quality work and outstanding customer service is the top priority, after ensuring that all safety measures are taken before, during and after each project. Your Responsibilities as a Leak Detection/ Corrosion Technician:

  • Conduct walking or mobile leak surveys using detection instruments (e.g., flame ionization detectors, CGI).
  • Identify and classify leaks according to DOT and company standards.
  • Inspect exposed piping for signs of atmospheric corrosion and environmental exposure.
  • Apply or recommend corrosion prevention coatings as needed.
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment regularly.
  • Document findings using GIS mapping tools and mobile reporting apps.
  • Communicate results to clients and internal teams.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulatory requirements.

What We Need from You (Our Requirements) – Leak Detection/Corrosion Technician

  • 2 years of experience in leak detection and corrosion inspection.
  • Familiarity with mobile GIS and digital reporting tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Willingness to learn – Instructor led training is required to receive Operator Qualification (OQ) under CFR Part 192 for leak survey and corrosion inspection tasks.
  • Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and to operate independently.
  • Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours if needed.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to use computer to complete documentation and receive and send email.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk all types of terrain (grass, ditches, wooded areas, gravel, etc.) in and around construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial and rural areas in all types of weather conditions (rain snow, cold, heat, etc.). May require walking up to 5 miles in one day, several times a week.
