Distinguishing Features of the Class
The Sewer Maintenance Supervisor I is considered a working supervisor who is responsible for the maintenance, operation and cleaning of the City?s sewer system. The incumbent makes certain work is being completed in an efficient manner, on schedule and in accordance with approved procedures. This position differs from the Labor Supervisor I due to the complexity of the work and the general knowledge of the methods and operations of the sewer system. Immediate supervision is received from the Sewer Maintenance Superintendent with work being reviewed in progress and upon completion. Supervision is exercised over personnel assigned.
Examples of work (Illustration Only)
Supervises and participates with the work crew in performing the following tasks:
- cleaning and maintenance of the sewer system including sewers, chambers, siphons, wells, catch basins and receivers utilizing such tools as power and hand wenches, scoop buckets, scrapers and equipment;
- emergency repair of sewer breaks, cave-ins and part depressions;
- erection of safety barricades;
Investigates and determines the cause of cellar and street flooding;
Maintains records and reports on investigations and completion of work;
Operates truck in the performance of work when necessary;
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Promotional
Continuous and permanent status as an Equipment Operator (Sewer Authority), Maintenance Assistant (Sewer Authority), or Sewer Construction Worker in the Buffalo Sewer Authority for one year.
Special Requirement: Possession of a current Class A or Class B NYS Commercial Driver's License which must be presented at time of appointment must be maintained during employment
*Applicants must consent to screening requirements of the FMCSA Clearinghouse program (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) in accordance with Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 382 as part of the application process for positions requiring a NYS Commercial Drivers' License

Good knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of the City's sewer systems including trench excavation, backfilling, repaving and general safety practices;
Good knowledge of tools and equipment used in sewer maintenance and cleaning and repairing;
Mechanical aptitude;

Ability to be trained in the operation and maintenance of television cameras used when problems arise in sewer system;
Ability to establish effective working relationships with others;
Ability to follow oral and written directions;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
