Job description

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for an Entry Level SUE Technician opening in our Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, or Ithaca, NY office. LaBella fosters a team-oriented atmosphere and emphasizes unparalleled client services. As an Entry Level SUE Technician for LaBella, you will assist with all SUE activities for land surveying and multi-disciplinary projects. You will be integral to the safe and accurate identification, mapping, and surveying of utility systems. You'll have the chance to assist with daily field operations, working alongside a skilled team of technicians, engineers, and surveyors.

Duties:

  • Assist experienced SUE Technicians with the identification, locating, and mapping of underground utility systems.
  • Learn to operate and maintain SUE equipment, including electromagnetic locating equipment and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), under the direction of experienced staff.
  • Assist with field investigations, utility designating, records research, and collection of utility information.
  • Read and interpret basic utility maps, plans, sketches, and project drawings with guidance from senior staff.
  • Assist with surveying and field data collection for land surveying and multidisciplinary projects.
  • Prepare accurate daily field notes, sketches, photographs, reports, and other project documentation.
  • Enter and organize field data using electronic systems and other project software.
  • Assist with reviewing field information and SUE deliverables for accuracy and completeness.
  • Work closely with SUE technicians, surveyors, engineers, and other project team members to complete field and office assignments.
  • Participate in project scheduling, coordination, and safety meetings.
  • Assist with routine maintenance, organization, and inventory of SUE equipment and technology.
  • Follow company safety procedures and assist with maintaining a safe work environment in the field.
  • Maintain organized project records and assist with archiving project information.
  • Represent the company professionally when working with clients, contractors, municipalities, and other project stakeholders.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Salary Range: $24.00 - $30.00 an hour

The specific salary offered may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location.

Requirements

  • Associate degree, bachelor's degree, or coursework in land surveying, engineering technology, geology, environmental science, forestry, construction, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with an interest in surveying, utilities, construction, engineering, or a related field may also be considered.
  • Strong interest in learning subsurface utility engineering (SUE), utility locating, surveying, and field data collection.
  • Ability to learn and safely operate technical field equipment with training and supervision.
  • Basic ability to read maps, drawings, or plans and a willingness to develop these skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately record field information.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow direction from experienced technicians and project managers.
  • Dependable, motivated, and willing to learn new technical skills.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn project-specific software and data collection systems.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Carlson, InRoads, or similar software is a plus but not required.
  • Previous experience with surveying, construction, utilities, GIS, environmental fieldwork, or similar activities is a plus but not required.
  • OSHA or other safety certifications are a plus but not required.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate company vehicles.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding field activities, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to travel locally and work occasional overtime based on project needs.
