AZUSA POLICE DEPARTMENT IS NOW HIRING!
This is a part-time position with a maximum of 19 hours per week. The work schedule could be days, evenings and/or weekends.
SALARY INFORMATION
$29.31 - $35.62 Hourly

DEFINITION
Under the general direction of the Chief of Police, the Special Services Officer performs security duties at city-owned facilities (to include buildings and outdoor spaces) and books and processes arrestees; provides security and care for persons in custody; prepares arrestees for court; transports arrestees to court and outside detention facilities; coordinate visitations; respond to public inquiries; and prepare and serve meals those persons in custody.
Essential Functions
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents will be assigned to a division of the Police Department as designated by the Chief of Police. The Special Services Officer must maintain strict confidentiality with all information obtained during their official duties. This position is considered an entry-level position responsible for the safety and security of City-owned facilities and the safe and efficient operation of the jail. Incumbents are subject to rotating shifts, weekends, and holiday work. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Police Officer in that the latter performs more complex and technical field and law enforcement duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Works a fixed post or tours the inner/outer perimeter of a city facility to detect or prevent individuals or groups from committing acts which are injurious to others or to property within or around a facility.
  • Ensures that only authorized employees, vendors or other appropriately identified persons and permitted access to closed or restricted areas.
  • Relays any suspicious persons, behavior, activity, or objects to appropriate personnel.
  • Writes a daily activity, incident, or other related reports.
  • Operates miscellaneous equipment and/or motor vehicles as required in the conduct of routine patrol or to report to alternate assignment posts in accordance with staffing needs.
  • Issues written warnings for parking violations and issues citations when appropriate.
  • Books and processes arrestees; types booking records of incoming prisoners; photographs and fingerprints prisoners; receives, records, and maintains control of arrestee's personal property as required; supervises and maintains the care and security of persons in custody; readies prisoners for court appearances; cites and releases prisoners; releases prisoner's property.
  • Maintains jail operations, facilities, and records in an efficient and effective manner; coordinates visitations and responds to visitors' questions and concerns; applies federal, state, and local laws related to the care and custody of prisoners; ensures adherence to safe work methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the general public, departmental staff, and other agencies; provides information as appropriate and resolves service issues and complaints.
  • Conducts searches of persons in custody for contraband and other items and may be required to carry a firearm and safety equipment during the performance of duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience
  • Education: HS/GED.
  • Experience: Any combination of education and/or experience that would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance.

Licenses or Certification
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must pass the American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification class training as often as provided by the City in order to maintain certification.
  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

  • Knowledge of the California Penal Code and applicable civil codes.
  • Police Department policies, laws, and regulations.

Part-time employees are paid an hourly rate based on hours worked and typically work 19 hours or less per week. The City of Azusa does not pay into Social Security, so part-time employees are enrolled in the Accumulation Program for Part-Time and Limited-Service Employees (APPLE). Part-time employees pay 3.75% of wages into this retirement program and the City matches the employee's (3.75% of wages) share.
Paid Sick Leave:
Effective July 1, 2015, part-time employees accrue sick leave beginning with the first full pay period of employment on the basis of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. The maximum accrual per year is 48 hours. A waiting period of 90 days is required before an employee may be eligible to use paid sick leave. Although paid sick leave can be carried over year to year, an employee can only accumulate up to a maximum of 48 hours and may use up to 24 hours in any one year.
This position is not covered by any other medical benefits.
Part-time employees are not considered to be part of the City of Azusa Merit and Civil Service System and are thus designated as non-classified employees. Part-time employees are "at will" employees and, as such, may be terminated at any time without any right of appeal.
Recruitments for part-time position vacancies will be conducted by the Human Resources Department. Announcements for position vacancies shall remain open for application for a minimum of five (5) days or until one hundred (100) applications have been received.
