Job description

Position Description This is entry level routine work focusing on the care and maintenance of the animal shelter facility and impounded animals. An Open Continuous Announcement is an announcement that allows the Baldwin County Commission to establish a pool of qualified candidates. Any applications submitted are considered active for 6 months from the date of receipt.

Selections may be made any time a vacancy becomes available. Successful applicants must pass a criminal and motor vehicle background check and will be subject to a pre-employment drug test and physical. Essential Job Functions Feeds, waters, exercises, and grooms impounded animals.

Evaluates animal behaviors, health, etc. Cleans and disinfects cages, floors, and walls of kennels. Monitors animals for illness, disease, and/or injury and reports same to supervisor.

Works under the supervision of the Senior Animal Control Technician when the Animal Resource Supervisor is not available. Enters data and information into a computerized system for animals processed into the shelter. Ensures animals are properly tagged and penned.

Administer medications and vaccinations. Interacts with the public to provide adoption of available pets and to ensure the return of animals to the proper owners. Assists in offsite adoption and fundraising events when necessary.

Uses appropriate tools to handle animals in a manner that protects the safety of the employee, animal, coworkers, and the public. Transports animals to the veterinarian. Maintains Animal Shelter grounds as needed.

Drives a department vehicle as needed. Prepares and maintains data as necessary. Works weekends on a rotational basis as assigned.

Performs related work as required. Education and Experience Possess a valid driver's license and be insurable by the County's insurance standards. Minimum of two (2) years' experience working with animals; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Other Characteristics Willingness to work overtime and non-standard hours as required. Be willing and available to attend training related to job. Injuries from animals pose a work hazard for employees in this class.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Some knowledge of the care and feeding of animals. Some knowledge of the laws, ordinances and regulations governing the custody and disposition of animals. Some knowledge of safety practices and procedures in dealing with animals.

Some knowledge of computers and job-related software programs, or the ability to readily acquire such knowledge Ability to read, interpret and explain animal control laws, ordinances and regulations. Ability to make clear, concise reports. Ability to operate a two-way radio.

Ability to work with animal odors and disinfectants. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous tasks such as lifting, carrying, crawling and running.

Ability to work in varying weather conditions, to include heat and cold temperatures. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and travel to locations within the community.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, employees and the general public. Manual dexterity to write and type.
