Job description

Assistant Processing Technician in an entry level introductory role within the BCUS processing team. The ideal candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Processing Manager and will be trained in the various skills and techniques required to become a processing technician. Strong attention detail, initiative and a willingness to learn are requirements for this entry level role.

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently understand relevant guidelines, policies, and SOPs.
    • Complies with all regulatory guidelines, occupational health as well as health and safety programs, in accordance with company policies and procedures.
    • Conduct daily health observations of NHPs
    • Perform O&P swab and fecal collection from NHPs
    • Monitoring of hospitalized NHPS
    • Processing preparation and clean up.
    • Other duties as assigned.

None

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be able to read, write, and interpret documents including task descriptions, standard operating procedures, and other instructions.
  • Bilingual for Spanish is preferred, but not required
  • At least 1 yearsโ€™ experience in an Animal vivarium or husbandry setting to include health observations of animals.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Patient: Being patient helps to calm nervous or frightened animals if they are ill.
  • Observant: Accurately assessing the habits, behavior, and physical appearance of an animal is important to obtaining accurate observation findings.
  • Critical thinking: Properly evaluating the facts and information relative to the treatment being conducted is important for coming to an accurate conclusion.
  • Interpersonal: Having strong relationship skills allows technicians to work effectively with veterinarians, assistants, and others involved in animal care.
  • Verbal and written communication: Describing and recording observations, calculations, and findings clearly and accurately is key.
  • Strength and endurance: Being physically fit is necessary, as animals may need to be manipulated or lifted, as well as heavy medical equipment and instruments.
  • Observe the behavior and condition of animals.
  • Provide care or emergency first aid to recovering or injured animals.
  • Restrain animals during exams or procedures.
  • Administer anesthesia to animals and monitor their responses.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Proof of measles vaccination or updated titers prior to initial contact with animals.
  • Current results of TB testing or be tested prior to initial contact with animals. Annual tuberculosis screening is required of all employees.
  • Employees may occasionally need to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate facility equipment.
  • Visual acuity to handle potentially hazardous chemicals, cleaners, biologics (including but not limited to direct handling of human byproducts and viruses) and/or sharps.
  • Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment in each area as described by SOPs.
  • Has the ability to withstand ambient temperatures which may exceed 90ยฐF.
  • Personnel must be able to carry out the essential functions of this position with reasonable accommodation if disabled.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Potential exposure to disinfectants, chemicals, biologics, infectious agents (BSL1, BSL2), animal dander, and dust.
  • Normal scientific laboratory conditions may work with hazardous materials and unpleasant odors.
