What is an enterprise network engineer?

Enterprise Network Engineers are IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting the large-scale computer networks used by businesses and organizations. They ensure that data, voice, and video communications run efficiently and securely across local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs). Their role often involves configuring routers, switches, firewalls, and other networking hardware, as well as monitoring network performance and security. Enterprise Network Engineers are also tasked with planning for network expansion, integrating new technologies, and responding to outages or cyber threats.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an enterprise network engineer?

To thrive as an Enterprise Network Engineer, you need a strong understanding of network architecture, routing and switching, and security protocols, often supported by a bachelor's degree in IT or a related field. Familiarity with enterprise-grade hardware, network monitoring tools, and certifications such as Cisco CCNP or CompTIA Network+ is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you diagnose issues and collaborate across teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining reliable, secure, and high-performing networks essential to business operations.

How does an enterprise network engineer typically collaborate with other IT teams within an organization?

Enterprise Network Engineers often work closely with various IT teams, such as security, systems administration, and application support, to ensure seamless network performance. Collaboration involves coordinating network changes, troubleshooting complex issues, and implementing security protocols. Effective communication is key, as network engineers frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to plan upgrades, roll out new technologies, and respond to incidents. This collaborative environment helps maintain a reliable and secure network infrastructure that supports the organization's goals.

  • Consulting & Advisory Services: Serve as a strategic advisor to enterprise clients, aligning network design with business goals and risk posture.
  • Pre-Sales Solutioning: Support the sales team in scoping opportunities, conducting technical discovery, building solution architectures, and contributing to proposal development and client presentations.
  • Technology Leadership: Define best practices, reference architectures, and solution standards for networking projects. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal knowledge sharing.
  • Security Integration: Architect and implement secure network environments, incorporating zero-trust principles, segmentation, and regulatory compliance (e.g., HIPAA, PCI, SOX).
  • Automation & Monitoring: Leverage tools such as Ansible, Python, and modern monitoring platforms to streamline operations, improve visibility, and enable proactive network management.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Project Management Office (PMO), solution architects, and customer stakeholders to ensure timely, successful project delivery.
  • Industry Engagement: Stay informed on emerging networking trends and technologies. Represent the organization in vendor engagements, webinars, and industry forums as needed.

Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in enterprise networking, designing and implementing enterprise-class network solutions
  • Proven track record of high-level consulting and executive communication, particularly in enterprise or Fortune 1000 environments
  • Demonstrated success in pre-sales engineering, solution development, and technical leadership roles
  • Deep expertise in routing and switching (BGP, OSPF, MPLS), WAN optimization, SD-WAN, network segmentation, NAC, and wireless technologies
  • Hands-on experience with Fortinet (NGFW, SD-WAN, NAC) and/or Arista (EVPN-VXLAN, CloudVision, spine-leaf architectures)
  • Preferred certifications: Fortinet FCP / NSE 8, Arista ACE Level 3, CCIE, JNCIE, CISSP, or other advanced credentials
  • Strong familiarity with network automation and infrastructure-as-code (Ansible, Python, Terraform preferred)
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and documentation skills
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident to comply with export control requirements

What We Value
  • A strong sense of ownership, accountability, and commitment to client success
  • Strategic thinking combined with practical engineering execution
