Assistant Professor of Clinical/Counseling Psychology

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Psychology, with particular expertise in Child, Family, or Couples Therapy. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 22-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Department of Psychology: The Department of Psychology consists of 18 tenured/tenure track faculty and approximately 1100 students. Some courses are taught by part-time lecturer faculty as well. The department offers both a minor and a BA in Psychology, as well as an MS in Psychology intended to prepare students for licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists. The Psychology Department includes a diverse and inclusive group of faculty and students. In general, the psychology student population is more diverse than the general campus population with 65% underrepresented minority students compared to 50% for CPP overall. The position primarily requires work to be completed physically on campus. Most faculty members fulfill their responsibilities in person, with some flexibility for remote days to support a healthy work-life balance. The faculty members meet regularly and work collaboratively (they often attend the same conferences, work together to improve curriculum, share resources with one another, collaborate on research, etc.). The environment is collegial, supportive, and focused on faculty development.

Position description: The new faculty member will prepare and teach classes that serve the needs of the department and create a welcoming, engaging, and constructive experience for students. They will advise students on career-related and academic topics. They will supervise student research activities and support their academic pursuits. They will be productive by establishing a line of research through publication and presentation of their work. They will serve the institution by collaborating with colleagues on curriculum, administrative, and human resource-related tasks at the department, college, and university levels. The new faculty member will continue to develop themselves by learning about teaching, technology, and by keeping abreast of developments in their field. The faculty member will teach courses on a variety of topics (e.g., abnormal psychology, theories of counseling, basic counseling skills, treatment of children/families/couples, and research methods in psychology) and will be expected to teach in our clinical MS program, which prepares students for licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). This position/title is covered by the California Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Minimum requirements include:

  • A completed initial application submitted in full by the due date. 
  • PhD in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy or a closely related field by time of appointment. [If you have a degree in a related field not listed, please provide as part of your application packet a 1-page statement explaining how it is closely related.] 
  • CA licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist, MFT, or LPCC 
  • Graduate level coursework or research qualifying you to teach undergraduate courses related to clinical/counseling psychology (e.g., abnormal psychology, theories of counseling, basic counseling skills), graduate-level courses in treatment of children/families/couples, and courses on research methods in psychology. 
  • One class teaching as instructor of record at the undergraduate or graduate level OR as a teaching assistant with an instructional role. 
  • Program of research relevant to either clinical/counseling psychology or to pedagogy (the teaching of psychology) more broadly. English language proficiency. 

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Additional and successful (as evidenced by evaluations, etc.) experience teaching as instructor of record at the undergraduate or graduate level or teaching assistant with an instructional role. 
  • An active program of research with student involvement. 
  • Successful experience working as part of a team.

  • Is emotionally intelligent, guiding their own behavior with an understanding of others' opinions and perspectives.

  • Actively monitors their own and others' performance to look for avenues for improvement.  
  • Is oriented toward helping others. 
  • Has knowledge of social justice issues.  
  • Understands the legal and ethical context of teaching in higher education broadly, but also in the discipline of Psychology. 
  • Has knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis procedures. 
  • Demonstrates an ability to use oral and written communication effectively to ensure others' understanding

  3. A curriculum vitae comprised of at least those elements specified in the job description and including the names, titles, emails, and telephone numbers of at least five individuals who can speak to the candidate's potential for success in this position. It should also outline the courses taught, including role in instruction (i.e. TA, instructor of record, etc.), and modality of course (i.e. face-to-face, hybrid, synchronous online, asynchronous online, etc.). Please include any campus or community service experience. 
  4. Transcripts showing highest degree earned (an official transcript will be required of finalists). 
  5. For applicants in a "related" field to psychology, transcripts showing graduate level psychology classes (an official transcript will be required of finalists). (If these classes are also listed on the transcript for your degree, it is not necessary.) 
  6. Three letters of recommendation dated within the last two years. 
  7. Evidence of teaching effectiveness in the form of student and/or supervisor evaluation of at least one class.
