What is an engineering mechanic?

Engineering mechanics are professionals who apply principles of mechanics, physics, and engineering to analyze, maintain, and repair mechanical systems and machinery. They play a crucial role in ensuring that equipment and systems operate efficiently and safely in various industries, including manufacturing, aerospace, and automotive. Engineering mechanics use diagnostic tools to identify issues, perform routine maintenance, and implement solutions to mechanical problems. Their work often involves collaborating with engineers and other technical staff to optimize system performance and reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an engineering mechanic?

To excel as an Engineering Mechanic, you need a strong background in mechanical systems, troubleshooting, and maintenance, typically supported by a relevant technical diploma or certification. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and industry-standard safety protocols is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualities ensure reliable machinery operation, minimize downtime, and contribute to safe and efficient engineering environments.

What are some common challenges faced by engineering mechanics when working on complex machinery, and how are they typically addressed?

Engineering Mechanics often encounter challenges such as diagnosing intricate system malfunctions, working with outdated or incomplete schematics, and managing time-sensitive repairs. These challenges are usually addressed by leveraging diagnostic tools, collaborating closely with engineers and other mechanics, and participating in ongoing training to stay current with technological advancements. Additionally, strong problem-solving skills and thorough documentation help ensure efficient troubleshooting and long-term reliability of repairs.

What is the difference between Engineering Mechanic vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectEngineering MechanicMaintenance Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical certificationsHigh school diploma; technical or vocational training
Work EnvironmentFactories, industrial plants, manufacturing facilitiesFacilities, plants, equipment maintenance areas
Employer & IndustryManufacturing, energy, industrial sectorsFacilities management, manufacturing, utilities
Job FocusRepair, troubleshooting, and maintaining mechanical systemsPreventive maintenance, repairs, and equipment servicing

Engineering Mechanics typically focus on repairing and maintaining complex mechanical systems in industrial settings, often requiring specialized certifications. Maintenance Technicians perform routine and preventive maintenance tasks to ensure equipment operates smoothly. While both roles involve mechanical skills and work in similar environments, Engineering Mechanics often handle more technical repairs and troubleshooting.

How much do engineering mechanics make?

Engineering mechanics technicians typically earn a median annual salary of around $60,000, with salaries varying based on experience, location, and industry. They often work with tools like CAD software and may require specialized certifications or training.

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer II to support the design, analysis, and development of mechanical systems for electronic products in a mission-focused environment. This role is ideal for a mid-level engineer with a strong background in thermal engineering, mechanical design, and electronics packaging, who can work independently while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering teams.

The Mechanical Engineer II will play a key role in supporting Integrated Product Teams across the full product lifecycle, including design, analysis, prototyping, testing, and sustainment of digital, RF/analog, and mixed-signal electronics hardware. This position requires hands-on design experience and the ability to apply thermal principles to real-world engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical parts, enclosures, and assemblies for electronic systems using SolidWorks or similar CAD tools
  • Lead and support thermal analysis efforts for electronic hardware, including heat dissipation and airflow considerations
  • Perform and interpret thermal and structural evaluations through simulation and testing
  • Apply principles of conduction, convection, and radiation to improve system performance and reliability
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure proper PCB integration, mechanical fit, and thermal performance
  • Support prototype builds, design verification testing, and design reviews
  • Develop and maintain 3D models, 2D drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Provide technical input on materials selection, manufacturability, and design trade-offs
  • Contribute to system-level design decisions and mentor junior engineers as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • 5–10 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience with thermal engineering for electronic systems
  • Strong background in mechanical design and product development
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software
  • Solid understanding of heat transfer principles, including conduction, convection, and radiation
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-based engineering environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using ANSYS or similar analysis tools
  • Background in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Experience analyzing convection and radiation effects in electronic systems
  • Familiarity with electronics packaging and PCB mechanical integration
  • Experience supporting prototyping, lab testing, and environmental testing

Benefits Overview

  • Paid Time Off: 15–25 days annually based on tenure, plus 11 paid holidays (never use-or-lose)
  • Retirement: Up to 15% employer contribution to a 401(k) through match and profit sharing
  • Medical Coverage: Free medical insurance for employees, with optional buy-up plans for dependents
