These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

What are Engineering Managers?

Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and overseeing engineering teams within an organization. They coordinate projects, manage team members, allocate resources, and ensure that engineering goals align with company objectives. Their role often involves a combination of technical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to deliver successful engineering solutions on time and within budget.

What Is an Engineering Manager?

Engineering managers supervise teams of engineers and other professionals whose jobs are to collaborate on designing and developing products ranging from medical equipment to computer hardware to electrical components. Your job duties are to coordinate with teams and departments, help engineers troubleshoot and problem-solve, and make sure everyone stays on schedule to meet design and production deadlines. You need strong project management skills, extensive engineering knowledge, and excellent communication and leadership skills to succeed as an engineering manager.

How does an Engineering Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Job description

Engineering Manager
Are you a hands-on engineering leader who thrives on building high-performing teams? Do you get energized by turning product vision into predictable, high-quality delivery? Ready to shape engineering culture at a profitable, growing company where your impact is felt immediately?
Platphorm is looking for an Engineering Manager to own day-to-day engineering leadership across our marketplace and advice products - driving execution, growing the team, and partnering closely with Product to deliver measurable business outcomes.
You will have the opportunity to define how a senior engineering team works, ships, and grows - with all the excitement of a small tech company that is stable and profitable.
Platphorm, LLC builds innovative multi-modal information exchanges and provides a soup-to-nuts system that allows businesses to build scalable, reliable marketplaces where buyers pay sellers for information delivered by voice, chat, video, mail, SMS, or recorded phone message. The marketplaces we've built enable anyone to provide fee-based advice in their area of expertise, at a price of their choosing, and for others to find them and pay for a conversation; this portfolio includes our website "Everclear" which provides clients 24/7 access to trusted advisors.
The Opportunity
This hire is part of a deliberate organizational investment: our current engineering leader is moving into another role, and we need a strong engineering manager to take full ownership of execution, team health, and technical operations. The company is investing heavily in product-led growth, conversion optimization, and analytics maturity - you will not be administering a backlog, you will be the engine behind all of it.
The engineering team is supported by dedicated Product, DevOps, QA, and a Scrum master.
What You Will Own
  • Engineering execution: Delivery outcomes, technical quality, and team velocity across a Ruby on Rails and React codebase. Work alongside a dedicated Scrum Master who owns sprint ceremonies and processes.
  • People management: 1:1s, performance feedback, career development, hiring, and retention for 6 FTEs and 3 full-time contractors.
  • Technical operations: Production stability, incident response, deployment pipeline health, and coordination with DevOps.
  • Process maturity: Improve estimation accuracy, reduce cycle time, strengthen code review and QA handoff processes, and establish clear engineering metrics.
  • Cross-functional partnership: Work closely with VP Product and the Product team (2 Senior PMs, 1 UX Designer) to translate priorities into well-scoped, deliverable work.
Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with Product to align engineering capacity with business priorities, deliver predictable high-quality output across the Rails/React stack, and provide clear estimates and tradeoff analysis to inform roadmap decisions
  • Build a culture of ownership, transparency, and pragmatic problem-solving - consistent with the team's existing values
  • Champion the adoption of AI-assisted development tools across the team - evaluate, integrate, and establish best practices for AI coding assistants as part of everyday engineering workflows
  • Own production reliability, uptime, and incident response in partnership with DevOps
  • Drive ongoing web performance optimization - Core Web Vitals, page load times, and frontend/backend bottleneck identification. This is an active area of investment, not a solved problem.
  • Invest in the team through regular 1:1s, clear performance feedback, and active career development
Qualifications
Required
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience with at least 2 years in an engineering management or team lead role
  • Must be comfortable working with consumer platforms that contain adult themes, mature content, and dating-related content
  • Strong hands-on background with Ruby on Rails and modern JavaScript frameworks (React preferred)
  • Experience managing teams of 5-15 engineers, including fully remote and distributed teams
  • Track record of delivering software on predictable cadences in a product-driven environment
  • Experience managing both full-time employees and contractors as a unified team
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) and a point of view on how they change engineering workflows
  • Clear, direct communication style; comfortable partnering with senior leadership and cross-functional teams, and holds direct reports accountable for results
Preferred
  • Experience in marketplace, e-commerce, or consumer-facing web platforms
  • Familiarity with analytics tooling (GA4, BigQuery) and feature flagging (ConfigCat or similar)
  • Experience with observability stacks (Kibana, OpenSearch, ELK, or similar)
  • Familiarity with containerized deployment workflows (Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD)
  • Background in organizations navigating growth-stage transitions or evolving product strategy
  • Experience with telephony or video platforms (WebRTC, Twilio, or similar)
  • Track record of improving web performance (Core Web Vitals, Lighthouse, profiling, and resolving frontend/backend bottlenecks)
  • Comfort building process in a lean environment, where not everything is already defined
Why Join Us
  • High-impact role with direct influence on business outcomes - not a cog in a large machine
  • Low turnover and a track record of sustainability
  • A team that values pragmatism, open-mindedness, and craft
  • Genuine work/life balance - we don't burn people out
  • Direct access to the CTO and a close partnership with the VP of Product
  • Opportunity to shape engineering culture and processes at a pivotal moment for the business
  • A team actively embracing AI-assisted development - you'll lead the transition, not pitch it uphill

Benefits include:
  • Fully remote position with two in-person meetings per year
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401K matching program with no vesting period
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • Generous PTO plan and 12 company-paid holidays plus your birthday
  • Work-life balance
  • Frequent virtual team-building events
  • Friendly and diverse coworkers
