What Is an Engineering Manager?

Engineering managers supervise teams of engineers and other professionals whose jobs are to collaborate on designing and developing products ranging from medical equipment to computer hardware to electrical components. Your job duties are to coordinate with teams and departments, help engineers troubleshoot and problem-solve, and make sure everyone stays on schedule to meet design and production deadlines. You need strong project management skills, extensive engineering knowledge, and excellent communication and leadership skills to succeed as an engineering manager.

How does an Engineering Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

An engineering manager oversees engineering teams, manages project timelines, allocates resources, and ensures technical goals are met. They coordinate between technical staff and other departments, often providing leadership, mentorship, and strategic planning. Job description

At Range, we're building towards a world where anyone can live the financial life they imagine for themselves. If that sounds like a mission you want to be a part of, let's create it together.
We're building AI-powered wealth management. Investments, taxes, retirement, estate planning, all in one platform instead of scattered across different advisors and apps. We're backed by Google's Gradient Ventures, Cathay Innovation, Scale Venture Partners, and more. We're growing fast while still small enough that everyone's work is visible and impactful.
About the Role
You'll lead a team of full-stack engineers while staying deep in the code yourself. Think player-coach: you're shipping production features one day and unblocking an engineer's architecture decision the next. You'll own the delivery cadence, technical quality, and growth trajectory of your team while partnering closely with product, design, and our financial planning org to build the platform our members rely on. We ship fast, we ship often, and we expect our engineering leaders to understand every layer of what we're building.
This role is based at Range's Headquarters in McLean, VA. Employees hired for this position will work in office Monday-Friday. If you are not currently located in this area, your willingness to relocate will be a contingency for employment.
What You'll Do With Us
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 4-8 full-stack engineers. Run effective 1:1s, give direct and specific feedback, and create clear career development paths.
  • Stay hands-on in the codebase. Write production code, conduct thorough code reviews, and make architectural decisions on systems that handle real money and sensitive financial data.
  • Own your team's delivery end-to-end. Scope projects, set milestones, remove blockers, and hold yourself and your engineers accountable for shipping high-quality work on time.
  • Partner closely with product managers and designers to translate member needs and business goals into engineering roadmaps and sprint plans.
  • Drive engineering excellence across the organization-improve CI/CD pipelines, strengthen observability and testing, reduce deployment friction, and raise the bar on code quality.
  • Recruit and retain exceptional engineers. Build a team you'd want to work for. Sell candidates on the mission and close them on the opportunity.
  • Champion our AI-first approach. Help the team adopt and integrate AI tooling into daily workflows to multiply velocity and output quality.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with our planning team, investment and tax specialists and compliance to ensure what we build meets the standard our members expect from their financial partner.
  • Establish and champion engineering best practices. Produce clean, high-quality code, tests, and documentation.

What Will Set You Apart
  • 5+ years of professional full stack software engineering experience with at least 1-2 years leading a team.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, or similar.
  • Experience working with AWS or similar cloud platforms.
  • Excellent product instincts. You first think about users rather than the best technical solution.
  • Track record of building, shipping, and operating reliable production systems-you understand what it takes to build secure software at scale, not just pass a code review.
  • Genuine interest in growing people. You give direct, actionable feedback and have helped engineers level up through mentorship or management.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Ability to solve ambiguous problems without the need to be told exactly what to do.
  • Ability to pick up on new technologies very quickly.
  • Comfortable working across the stack (frontend, backend, infrastructure).
  • You communicate with clarity and conviction-with your team, with leadership, and across functions.
  • Bonus: experience in fintech, wealth management, regulated financial services or startups.

Benefits
  • Competitive base salary + meaningful equity with early exercise eligibility
  • Health & Wellness: 100% employer-covered medical insurance for employees (75% for dependents), plus dental and vision coverage
  • 401(k): Retirement savings program to support your future
  • Paid Time Off: 15 vacation days annually + most federal holidays
  • Parental Leave: Comprehensive leave policy for growing families
  • Technology Allowance: Spend what you need to make sure you're cruising at optimal speed
  • Team Weeks: We bring our team together every few months for hackathons, coaching, strategy discussions, and experiencing amazing events together
  • Meals: Select meals throughout the week to support convenience, collaboration, and productivity
  • Fitness: Monthly gym stipend to support your well-being
  • Career Growth: Conference attendance, workshops, and continued learning support
  • Boomerang Program: After two years, take time to launch your own venture-we'll save your seat

Range is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. We are committed to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status. As a company, we are committed to designing products, building a culture, and supporting a team that reflects the diverse population we serve.
