What Is an Engineering Manager?

Engineering managers supervise teams of engineers and other professionals whose jobs are to collaborate on designing and developing products ranging from medical equipment to computer hardware to electrical components. Your job duties are to coordinate with teams and departments, help engineers troubleshoot and problem-solve, and make sure everyone stays on schedule to meet design and production deadlines. You need strong project management skills, extensive engineering knowledge, and excellent communication and leadership skills to succeed as an engineering manager.

How does an Engineering Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

What do you do as an engineering manager?

An engineering manager oversees engineering teams, manages project timelines, allocates resources, and ensures technical goals are met. They coordinate between technical staff and other departments, often providing leadership, mentorship, and strategic planning. Strong communication, technical expertise, and management skills are essential for this role.

Location: Arcadia, IN

Export Compliance: This position must meet export control compliance requirements. All applicants must be “U.S. persons” within the meaning of ITAR, as defined: a U.S. Citizen, a lawful permanent resident, political asylee, or refugee.

We’re partnering with a specialized aerospace manufacturing operation supporting highly engineered components for aviation and power generation applications. The organization is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead production operations, customer engagement, manufacturing strategy, and operational performance across a precision machining environment.

This role is heavily focused on leadership, operational execution, and customer-facing problem solving. The ideal candidate will have experience managing engineering or manufacturing teams within aerospace or precision manufacturing environments while working directly with OEM customers on quality, production, pricing, and operational challenges.

The Engineering Manager will oversee production workflows tied to EDM machining operations, support AS9100 and Nadcap compliance initiatives, mentor supervisors and manufacturing leaders, and help drive operational efficiency across the business. Candidates with strong aerospace manufacturing leadership backgrounds and exposure to turbine, jet engine, or highly regulated production environments will be especially well-aligned.

Key Responsibilities

This Engineering Manager will oversee day-to-day manufacturing and engineering operations across precision machining and EDM production environments. Responsibilities include driving operational performance, improving manufacturing efficiency, managing staffing and production schedules, overseeing budgeting and resource planning, supporting customer relationships with aerospace OEMs, and ensuring quality compliance with AS9100 and Nadcap standards. The role will also lead continuous improvement initiatives, support pricing and operational strategy discussions, collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing and quality teams, and mentor managers and supervisors to strengthen operational leadership throughout the organization.

Core Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing operations, preferably within aerospace or precision machining
  • 3+ years of leadership experience managing engineering, manufacturing, or operational teams
  • Experience working directly with OEM customers on production issues, pricing, negotiations, and operational support
  • Strong understanding of AS9100, Nadcap, or other aerospace manufacturing quality standards
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in engineering, business, operations, or related field

Preferred Background

  • Aerospace, turbine, jet engine, or power generation manufacturing experience
  • Familiarity with EDM machining technologies including Wire EDM, Fast Hole EDM, or Conventional EDM
  • Experience with GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, or similar OEMs
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing, 5S, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement initiatives
  • Experience mentoring supervisors, managers, and cross-functional manufacturing teams

Eligibility Requirement

This role may involve access to export-controlled technical data regulated under U.S. government compliance requirements. Candidates selected for positions requiring such access must qualify as a U.S. Person in accordance with ITAR regulations.

Employee Benefits Highlights

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage
  • 401(k) retirement program with employer contribution opportunities
  • Paid time off, paid holidays, and long-term career stability
  • Opportunity to work on highly engineered aerospace and turbine manufacturing programs supporting major OEM customers

What This Role Is Not:

  • Not a rapid transformation / slash-and-burn turnaround environment. Change must be thoughtful, collaborative, and sustainable.
  • Not a high-travel, high-burnout environment. This is intended to be a stable long-term leadership opportunity.
  • Not a pure director / executive strategy role. This is an engaged engineering leadership role.
