Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), version control systems (like Git), and potentially certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for successfully leading technical teams, delivering projects on time, and aligning engineering output with organizational goals.

What Is an Engineering Manager?

Engineering managers supervise teams of engineers and other professionals whose jobs are to collaborate on designing and developing products ranging from medical equipment to computer hardware to electrical components. Your job duties are to coordinate with teams and departments, help engineers troubleshoot and problem-solve, and make sure everyone stays on schedule to meet design and production deadlines. You need strong project management skills, extensive engineering knowledge, and excellent communication and leadership skills to succeed as an engineering manager.

How does an Engineering Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

Engineering Managers are often required to split their time between technical oversight—such as code reviews, architecture decisions, and project planning—and people management tasks like mentoring, performance reviews, and team development. Striking this balance can be challenging, especially in fast-paced environments. Successful Engineering Managers usually prioritize regular one-on-ones, foster open communication, and delegate technical tasks wisely to ensure both project goals and team morale are maintained. This dual focus helps nurture a high-performing, collaborative team while ensuring technical excellence.

Summary:

The Engineering Manager at autoMHatic Financial leads our emerging engineering function, bridging the gap between technical execution and organizational strategy. They are responsible for hiring and mentoring engineers, planning and delivering projects, and ensuring high-quality, on-time outcomes while fostering a healthy, high-performing team.

This is a hands-on role: you will help build and lead a cross-functional engineering team (backend, frontend, data, DevOps - primarily offshore/nearshore) while still contributing directly to design, coding, and code reviews for internal tools, integrations, and automations. You will serve as the primary technical point of contact for external partners and vendors and work closely with the VP of Technology to turn business priorities into an executable engineering roadmap.

The ideal candidate is a backend-leaning engineering leader with a strong background in APIs and services, familiarity integrating Snowflake as a core data platform, and a track record of owning projects end-to-end in small, high-growth environments. This role is 100% in-office.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow the internal engineering function, including hiring, mentoring, and managing a small, primarily offshore/nearshore team across backend, frontend, data, and DevOps.
  • Serve as the hands-on technical lead for internal tools, integrations, automations, and services, contributing directly to architecture, design, coding, and code reviews.
  • Act as the primary technical owner and main point of contact for external technology partners and vendors, leading integration design, implementation, and ongoing technical relationships.
  • Own end-to-end planning and delivery of engineering initiatives: define scope, estimates, milestones, and timelines; oversee execution; and manage launches and post-implementation follow-up.
  • Design, build, and maintain APIs and integrations between internal systems, partner platforms, and our data platform (including Snowflake), ensuring reliability, performance, and security.
  • Establish and run lightweight, effective engineering processes (SDLC, standards, branching, reviews, releases, incident response) and core team rituals (backlog grooming, sprint planning, standups, demos, retros).
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Operations, Credit, Servicing, and other Technology teams to translate business needs into clear technical requirements and deliver solutions that materially improve efficiency and quality.
  • Drive engineering quality through appropriate testing strategies, CI/CD pipelines, environment management, and pragmatic SRE/DevOps practices.
  • Monitor system and integration health; proactively identify issues; lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis; and implement durable fixes.
  • Communicate status, risks, dependencies, and trade-offs clearly to the VP of Technology and other stakeholders, helping align engineering work with company priorities.

Key Competencies:

  • Technical Leadership:Strong backend and integration skills, with enough breadth to guide work across frontend, data, and DevOps.
  • People & Team Leadership:Hires, mentors, and develops engineers; builds a healthy, accountable, and collaborative team culture.
  • Project Ownership:Plans and delivers projects end-to-end, managing scope, timelines, risks, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Partner Leadership:Represents autoMHatic Financial effectively with external technology partners, owning integration outcomes and technical relationships.
  • Execution Focus:Drives high-quality, on-time delivery in a dynamic, high-growth environment with evolving priorities.
  • Problem Solving:Breaks down complex technical and process issues, proposes pragmatic solutions, and follows through.
