Position Title:
Construction Engineering Inspector
Location: Montgomery, AL or Mobile, AL
Employment Status: Full-time
FLSA Status: Hourly
POSITION SUMMARY
2MNEXT is seeking a Construction Engineering Inspector (CEI) to support roadway and infrastructure projects for the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) in the Mobile and Montgomery regions. This role is responsible for inspecting construction activities, documenting project progress, and verifying contractor compliance with project plans, specifications, and ALDOT standards.
The ideal candidate will be an ALDOT-certified technician or inspector with experience in roadway construction inspection, capable of working independently in the field while maintaining accurate documentation and communication with project stakeholders.
This position may involve travel to project sites throughout southern and central Alabama. When project locations are outside a reasonable commuting distance, per diem or temporary lodging may be provided during the work week.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
•Perform field inspections to ensure construction activities comply with project plans, specifications, and ALDOT standards
•Monitor contractor operations and document work activities, labor, equipment, and materials used
•Prepare daily inspector reports detailing work performed, quantities installed, and any relevant project observations
•Conduct or assist with materials testing such as concrete testing, soil density testing, and roadway materials verification
•Operate testing equipment including nuclear density gauges and other field testing devices when applicable
•Review project plans and specifications to verify proper construction methods and materials
•Document quantities for contractor pay estimates and maintain accurate project records
•Communicate effectively with contractors, project managers, and agency representatives to resolve field issues
•Assist with field measurements, calculations, and construction documentation as required
•Maintain compliance with all project safety requirements and company safety standards
•Coordinate with project leadership to identify potential issues early and support timely project delivery
Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, notwithstanding work in other functional areas to cover absences and relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in construction inspection, roadway construction, or materials testing
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and standards
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently in field environments and manage daily reporting responsibilities
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and background requirements
  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity including walking, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods
  • Ability to work night shifts, weekends, or extended hours when required by project schedules
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
  • ALDOT Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) experience
  • One or more ALDOT or industry certifications, such as:
    • ALDOT Concrete Technician
    • ALDOT Asphalt Roadway Technician
    • ALDOT Earthwork Technician
    • ALDOT Quality Control Inspector (QCI)
    • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician
    • Work Zone Safety Certification
    • Nuclear Density Gauge Safety Certification
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Position entails work in both indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to weather conditions.
