What Does an Engineering Design Manager Do?

The job duties of an engineering design manager include overseeing a team of engineers and CAD designers on engineering projects. In addition to providing leadership to staff, in this career, you manage the budget planning for each project, work with concept development, and ensure that plans meet company or client needs and engineering standards. You offer guidance throughout the design process and inspect and sign off on design plans to ensure that they meet quality standards. As a manager, you are also responsible for providing effective staffing strategies and workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineering Design Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineering Design Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and team leadership, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with CAD software, PLM systems, and certifications such as PMP or PE are commonly required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to inspire and coordinate multidisciplinary teams make someone stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering innovative design solutions, meeting project deadlines, and ensuring effective collaboration across the organization.

What are the main challenges an Engineering Design Manager faces when balancing project deadlines with innovation?

Engineering Design Managers often need to ensure that their teams deliver high-quality designs within tight project timelines while also encouraging creativity and innovation. MWH is a leading water and wastewater treatment-focused general contractor in the US with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Fueled by the mission of Building a Better World, our teams are rapidly growing across the nation.

As a company committed to our team's well-being and growth, we offer a supportive work environment, opportunities for advancement, and the chance to contribute to a mission that shapes the future. Your expertise and ambition are valued here.

The work we do matters. The critical systems infrastructure we build changes lives, betters' communities, and improves ecosystems. If you're passionate about this, we want to hear from you!

About the Role

MWH is currently seeking a highly experienced and technically skilled Engineering Design Manager to lead, manage, and coordinate the design efforts of complex water infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate has extensive experience with municipal and/or industrial water/wastewater treatment facilities, and a proven track record of managing multidisciplinary engineering teams, overseeing quality, guiding permitting and regulatory compliance, and serving as a technical leader throughout design and preconstruction.

This position plays a key role in driving successful project delivery by integrating design development with constructability, budget adherence, schedule performance, and stakeholder collaboration. The Engineering Design Manager will serve as the primary design liaison between the owner, regulatory agencies, internal design teams, and third-party consultants.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and manage engineering design efforts for complex, multi-discipline projects, ensuring alignment with budget, schedule, quality, and contractual commitments.
  • Direct all phases of design (conceptual, preliminary, final), driving coordination across various disciplines.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all design-related issues, both internally and externally, with final technical accountability for overall project design and delivery.
  • Supervise and mentor multidisciplinary teams, including project managers and senior engineers, while managing multiple concurrent projects as needed.
  • Plan, schedule, and monitor the design process; lead internal and external design coordination meetings, P&ID reviews, and 3D model reviews.
  • Ensure design compliance with the project’s basis of design and company quality standards through regular interdisciplinary reviews and design verification activities.
  • Support project managers in proposal development, resource planning, scheduling, benchmarking, cost estimating, and design change management.
  • Oversee implementation and updates, ensuring adherence to company procedures and change management protocols.
  • Evaluate staffing needs, assign resources effectively, and maintain accurate forecasting.
  • Coordinate with subconsultants and external stakeholders; negotiate critical design issues and contract terms with clients and partner organizations.
  • Engage in professional development activities such as publishing technical papers, serving on committees, and participating in industry organizations.
  • Identify and support recruitment of new staff, participating in interviews and candidate selection.
  • Provide construction-phase support, including site visits and constructability input during design.
  • Foster strong client relationships, support business development efforts, and contribute to securing repeat and new project opportunities.
  • Ensure availability of VDC tools, oversee record documentation, and support delivery of closeout materials (O&M manuals, as-builts, etc.).
  • Travel as required for client meetings, site visits, and coordination efforts.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or related field; or equivalent experience and training/education.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
  • 10+ years of progressive design experience, including 5 years in design leadership or management role on large, multidisciplinary water infrastructure projects.
  • 5+ years of experience on water or wastewater treatment plant projects.
  • Proficiency in design software and tools (AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and BIM/VDC platforms).
  • Knowledge of relevant codes, permitting, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Track record of successful client relationship management and business development.
  • Demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel as required for project or client needs.

Compensation

  • The anticipated salary for this position is budgeted at $130,000 - $160,000 per year
