Engineering Change Order information

What is an engineering change order?

An Engineering Change Order (ECO) job involves managing and implementing changes to product designs, manufacturing processes, or documentation. Professionals in this role assess change requests, coordinate with engineering and production teams, and ensure updates are properly documented and executed. They play a key role in maintaining product quality, compliance, and efficiency while minimizing disruptions to production.

What are some common challenges faced in an engineering change order role?

A common challenge in an Engineering Change Order role is managing multiple change requests from various departments while ensuring accuracy and compliance with established protocols. Balancing the needs of engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams requires strong prioritization and coordination skills. It can also be demanding to keep documentation up-to-date and maintain clear communication with all stakeholders throughout the change process. Tackling these challenges successfully not only keeps projects on track but also builds strong relationships across the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the engineering change order position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Engineering Change Order (ECO) role, you need a solid understanding of engineering documentation, change management processes, and attention to detail, usually supported by experience in manufacturing or product development environments. Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, CAD software, and industry standards such as ISO or AS9100 is typically required. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate across multiple departments are valuable soft skills in this position. These skills are crucial for ensuring that design changes are accurately documented, efficiently implemented, and communicated to all stakeholders, minimizing errors and production delays.

Job description

Process Engineer

Interested in getting in at the ground floor of a new, disruptive company attacking an important multi-billion-dollar problem? Businesses and consumers continue to demand increasing data services at an exponential rate -- streaming, deep learning, analytics, loT connectivity, and more. What this means is higher performing CPUs, components, servers, and ultimately Data and Edge computing centers, all generating excessive heat that is increasingly difficult to manage with traditional cooling systems. Accelsius is developing revolutionary direct-to-chip, 2-Phase cooling technologies that empower and enable Server OEMs, Data Centers, and Edge Computing Operators to meet performance, sustainability, scale, and cost goals while serving this high-growth market for data services.

Accelsius is looking for a Process Engineer to join our engineering team as a hands-on manufacturing partner, moving fluidly between the CAD workstation and the shop floor to design and build prototype parts, jigs, and fixtures, develop clear work instructions, and train and certify operators on new processes. This position will report directly to the Director, Operations Engineering and the right candidate will combine strong technical fundamentals with practical, hands-on manufacturing skill and work closely with Quality to ensure processes are robust, repeatable, and well documented.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and iterate on prototype parts, jigs, fixtures, and tooling to support new product introduction and continuous improvement of existing processes.
  • Create and maintain detailed work instructions, process documentation, and visual aids for shop floor operators.
  • Train operators on new and revised processes; develop and administer operator certification programs.
  • Partner with Quality to investigate process-related issues, drive root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Use CAD software (SolidWorks or equivalent) to design fixtures, tooling, and prototype components.
  • Specify and implement torque control processes, including selection and setup of digital/smart torque tools; support calibration and data-tracking requirements for torque-critical assemblies.
  • Define in-process inspection methods and tools for process-critical criteria; train operators to use these tools effectively and consistently.
  • Work with the team to convert work instructions and in-process inspections into a traveler that preserves build history for traceability.
  • Support machine shop activities as needed, including basic machining, fabrication, and modification of fixtures and prototype hardware.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations to support engineering change orders (ECOs) and product transfers to production.
  • Identify and lead continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, quality, throughput, and cost.
  • Maintain accurate process documentation in the MES and related systems, and support audits as needed.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5-7+ years of process engineering experience in a manufacturing facility.
  • Hands-on experience designing and building prototype parts, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks strongly preferred).
  • Able to read and interpret mechanical drawings, and provide feedback to Design Engineering when needed.
  • Able to conceptualize, design, and fabricate fixtures and tooling from concept through implementation.
  • Experience creating work instructions for the manufacturing floor.
  • Demonstrated experience training and certifying production operators.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Quality teams on process control, non-conformances, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience with torque tools; familiarity with digital or smart torque tools and torque data tracking is a strong plus.
  • Machine shop experience (manual mill/lathe, basic fabrication) is a plus.
  • Startup experience is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with MES systems and electronic work instruction platforms.
  • Familiarity with JIRA or similar tools for tracking engineering changes and issues.
  • Experience supporting engineering change order (ECO) processes and product transfers from engineering to production.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to train and mentor production operators effectively.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work on the manufacturing floor, including standing, bending, and lifting up to 35 lbs. as needed.
  • Comfortable working with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment in a manufacturing environment.

Accelsius offers a competitive salary with equity, a full range of benefits including medical and dental, 401K, and flexible PTO.

The position is based on-site at Accelsius's Austin, Texas manufacturing facility.

This position includes the responsibilities outlined above and may also encompass additional duties as assigned to meet business and compliance needs.
