Engineering Change Order information

What is an engineering change order?

An Engineering Change Order (ECO) job involves managing and implementing changes to product designs, manufacturing processes, or documentation. Professionals in this role assess change requests, coordinate with engineering and production teams, and ensure updates are properly documented and executed. They play a key role in maintaining product quality, compliance, and efficiency while minimizing disruptions to production.

What are some common challenges faced in an engineering change order role?

A common challenge in an Engineering Change Order role is managing multiple change requests from various departments while ensuring accuracy and compliance with established protocols. Balancing the needs of engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams requires strong prioritization and coordination skills. It can also be demanding to keep documentation up-to-date and maintain clear communication with all stakeholders throughout the change process. Tackling these challenges successfully not only keeps projects on track but also builds strong relationships across the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the engineering change order position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Engineering Change Order (ECO) role, you need a solid understanding of engineering documentation, change management processes, and attention to detail, usually supported by experience in manufacturing or product development environments. Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, CAD software, and industry standards such as ISO or AS9100 is typically required. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate across multiple departments are valuable soft skills in this position. These skills are crucial for ensuring that design changes are accurately documented, efficiently implemented, and communicated to all stakeholders, minimizing errors and production delays.

Job description

Who we are looking for:

An Engineering Change Analyst to lead and govern the engineering change control, documentation management, and product lifecycle (PLM) processes across our Hardware engineering and manufacturing ecosystem. You will have full accountability for the integrity of our product configuration, driving the seamless transition of product changes from development through manufacturing, and serving as the key coordinator across cross-functional teams.

What you will do:

  • Lead the end-to-end Engineering Change Order (ECO) and Engineering Change Request (ECR) lifecycle, managing the workflows, approvals, and implementation schedules across local and remote teams.
  • Take accountability for configuration management governance, ensuring all engineering document updates, drawings, and specifications strictly adhere to ISO standards, quality requirements, and revision control protocols.
  • Actively support all efforts to simplify, streamline, and enhance the engineering change and configuration management processes.
  • Act as a hands-on mentor and subject matter expert for engineering teams, conducting deep-dive reviews of Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly structures, and part records to ensure alignment with documentation standards.
  • Serve as the primary interface between engineering, supply chain, quality, and manufacturing operations, translating complex engineering changes into clear business impact, cost assessments, and production timelines.
  • Bridge New Product Introduction (NPI) and high-volume production, ensuring that prototype configurations are matured, validated, and successfully transitioned into stable, production-ready system Baselines.
  • Balance change implementation speed with operational stability, strategically managing the volume and priority of changes to prevent production disruptions while keeping pace with engineering innovation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

What you will need:

  • 4 Year / Bachelors Degree - Engineering, Technology, or equivalent technical discipline required.
  • 5+ years of experience in Hardware configuration management, engineering change control, or document control in a fast-paced engineering or manufacturing environment.
  • Extensive experience administering and navigating major Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems such as Arena or 3Dexperience.
  • Mastery of Bill of Materials (BOM) management, including parent-child relationships, multi-level structures, and change effectivity strategies.
  • Practical understanding of CAD workflows and modeling environments (e.g., SolidWorks or PTC Onshape) to interpret engineering drawings and design intents.
  • Familiarity with ERP/SAP systems to ensure seamless integration between engineering releases and procurement/manufacturing execution systems.
  • Experience facilitating Change Control Board (CCB) meetings, driving alignment, decisions, and action items among diverse, cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Proven track record supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) programs and managing the maturation of technical documentation from prototype to mass production.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO documentation standards, quality management systems (QMS), and regulatory record maintenance.
  • Advanced analytical and reporting skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs, data visualization) to track ECO KPIs and lifecycle metrics.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills to influence cross-functional teams, resolve technical documentation disputes, and translate engineering changes into operational execution plans.
  • Experience in leveraging AI tools to accelerate Engineering workflow
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
