The Mechanical, Aerospace, and Acoustical Engineering Department at the University of Hartford invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Mechanical Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2026. While applicants from all areas of Mechanical Engineering are welcome, preference will be given to candidates with expertise in the general area of Mechanical Design, including machine and mechanism design, and/or mechatronics, and secondarily in solid mechanics, and/or manufacturing. The qualified applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree, excellent potential and dedication to teaching, research, service, and professional activities.
Applications are sought from candidates who can help the department conduct innovative research and provide world-class engineering education. The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute through their research, teaching, and/or service to the inclusive excellence in the academic community. Responsibilities
The successful applicant will ordinarily teach courses in the ABET accredited undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Program and the two graduate programs, a MS in ME and Master of Engineering in ME, which may change based on departmental needs. The department also has undergraduate ABET accredited programs in Aerospace Engineering and Acoustical Engineering & Music. Successful candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as related laboratories, collaborate with students on independent research, supervise student projects, and actively participate in service activities. There may also be opportunities to teach our innovative general education and interdisciplinary courses.
An active scholarly/research agenda with peer-reviewed publications, presentations, or other accomplishments are expected for successful tenure and promotion. Service to the department, college, and university typically includes advising students, contributing to student recruitment and retention, overseeing undergraduate research projects, and perhaps serving as the faculty advisor for a student organization, or other service activities. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to inclusive excellence, which the University defines as an unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant campus community where every student, staff member, and faculty colleague feels deeply rooted, empowered to flourish, and inspired to achieve their highest potential.
Required Qualifications
Required:
  • An earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline is required; ABDs will be considered providing the candidate can document a degree completion date that is prior to the position start date.

Preferred:
  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Strong interest in curriculum development, including both lecture based and laboratory based courses.
  • Industrial experience in mechanical engineering.
  • Mechanical engineering teaching experience at an ABET-accredited program with demonstrated ability to provide effective hands-on education.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to create an inclusive and equitable environment that celebrates individual identities, embraces diverse intellectual perspectives, and fosters a culture of respect and belonging.

The College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture offers undergraduate Engineering programs in Electrical, Computer, Acoustical and Music, Biomedical, Civil, Mechanical, Aerospace, and Robotics. It also offers undergraduate Engineering Technology programs in Audio, Computer and Electronic, Electromechanical, as well as Architectural Design + Technology. Additionally, the college offers an undergraduate program in Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering and Construction Management + Technology. The college also offers master's programs in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, as well as Architecture. The majority of our undergraduate programs are accredited by ABET, including the Architectural Design + Technology program. The Master of Architecture degree is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The University of Hartford is ideally situated in the heart of Connecticut's "Aerospace Alley," a registered trademark of the Aerospace Components Manufacturers group, one of the largest and most experienced concentrations of aerospace companies in the world. A sampling of OEM's near the University include Pratt & Whitney, Collins Aerospace, Kaman Aircraft, and Sikorsky - A Lockheed Martin Company. Many other aerospace manufacturing companies are within a 30-minute drive from campus. The proximity of such a large group of aerospace manufacturing companies to campus provides many opportunities for research and other industry collaborations.
