***This position can be hired as either an Engineer II or one level higher as an Engineer III depending on experience***
Job Summary
This position is for a Civil or Electrical Engineer in the Substation Engineering Department located in Plainfield, IN. The department is responsible for designing the physical layout for new substations, expansions to existing substations, upgrades, and failing equipment replacements that require engineering efforts to retrofit with the latest equipment. Substation Engineering is also responsible for site grading and drainage, foundation design, structural design and analysis, and electrical analysis for grounding and lightning protection. We are a diverse group of civil engineers, electrical engineers, and designer/drafters that all work together to contribute to our project's success.
The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
Job Responsibilities
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity,
  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities,
  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and make decisions that may affect the work of the team,
  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity,
  • Conducts engineering and related studies
  • Completes routine engineering projects and assignments are clearly defined with focus on development but must be able to complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with minimum impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technical competencies and has ability to interpret technical information and instructions. Proficient in technical and analytical competencies,
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities,
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills,
  • Maintains accurate records and files, and
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic Qualifications
Engineer II
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR a P.E.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • 2 years minimum required engineering experience

Engineer III
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR a P.E.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
  • 4 years minimum required engineering experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.
  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Occasional meetings occur within the substation environment
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to the posted Duke Energy facility. This position will also be expected to work in the office and perform field work.
