What does an Engine Calibration Engineer do?

An Engine Calibration Engineer is responsible for optimizing engine performance by adjusting and fine-tuning parameters such as fuel delivery, ignition timing, and emissions controls. They use specialized software and equipment to test engines, analyze data, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards while maximizing efficiency and drivability. These engineers often collaborate with design, testing, and manufacturing teams to develop calibrations that meet both engineering specifications and customer expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engine Calibration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engine Calibration Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or automotive engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience with engine performance and emissions systems. Proficiency in calibration software such as ETAS INCA, MATLAB/Simulink, and knowledge of OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) standards are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication stand out as essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and troubleshooting complex issues. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring engines meet performance, efficiency, and regulatory standards in a rapidly evolving automotive industry.

What are some common challenges an Engine Calibration Engineer faces when optimizing engine performance?

Engine Calibration Engineers often encounter challenges balancing performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions requirements. This role requires frequent testing and data analysis to fine-tune engine parameters, sometimes under tight deadlines for new vehicle launches. Additionally, keeping up with evolving regulatory standards and integrating new technologies, such as hybrid systems, can add complexity. Collaboration with software, hardware, and testing teams is essential to ensure all components work seamlessly together.

As a recognized leader in the specification, design, development, validation and production launch of advanced vehicle and powertrain systems, IAV Automotive Engineering deploys a leading team of technical experts, engineering tools and program processes from its North American Headquarters in Novi, Michigan.

IAV Automotive Engineering Inc is seeking a highly motivated Engine Dyno Calibration Development Engineer to support base engine calibration work. The position will be onsite at the project site in Metro Detroit area.

This position will be responsible for developing, validating, optimizing, and releasing production engine calibrations while supporting continuous engine dynamometer operations. The successful candidate will serve as a technical focal point between calibration, controls, software, hardware, test automation, and laboratory operations teams.

Essential Responsibilities & Activities:

  • Review engine hardware configurations, control software functionality, and calibration strategies to define development activities and testing requirements.
  • Generate test plans for developing base engine calibration and validation activities for calibration development.
  • Oversee day to day engine dyno test cell activity with the dyno operation teams. Perform daily data integrity checks, evaluate the data and test results, and investigate any deviations that arise.
  • Develop steady-state and transient engine calibrations to achieve performance, fuel economy, combustion stability, drivability, and emissions objectives.
  • Support cold-start emissions development, catalyst light-off optimization, engine-out and tail pipe emissions reduction strategies.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams for development activities, identify issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Collect, analyze, process, and interpret test data using established engineering methodologies.
  • Maintain calibration datasets, document calibration changes, support calibration release processes, and ensure full traceability of development decisions.
