Job description

Company Overview

Pattern Energy is a leading renewable energy companyย that develops, constructs, owns, and operates high-quality wind and solar generation, transmission, and energy storage facilities. Our mission is to transition the world to renewable energy through the sustainable development and responsible operation of facilities with respect for the environment, communities, and cultures where we have a presence.ย

Our approach begins and ends with establishing trust, accountability, and transparency. Our company values of creative spirit, pride of ownership, follow-through, and a team-first attitude driveย usย to pursue our mission every day. Our culture supports our values by fostering innovative and critical thinking and a deep belief in living up to our promises.ย ย

Headquartered in the United States, Pattern has a global portfolio of more than 30 power facilities and transmission assets, serving variousย customers that provide low-cost clean energy to millions of consumers.

Job Purpose

ย

The Energy Modeler role utilizes Patternโ€™s internal capacity expansion and production cost modeling suite (WIS:dom) to analyze North American energy markets and develops a comprehensive view of the current Pattern pipeline of construction, operating asset performance, and market dynamics that might create opportunities or risks. The role will assist ESP providing business actionable analysis to other departments of Pattern, including evaluating the value of assets, supporting operation, and incorporating complex grid and weather data into other business decisions. The Energy Modeler will: evaluate and update the codebase underlying the WIS:dom model to understand, improve, or add functionality to the code; understand and process model inputs in the context of current markets and business needs; run WIS:dom optimization models to support business decisions; and analyze and communicate results to business partners.

Key Accountabilities

  • Execute model simulations using the WIS:dom suite of tools. Provide output analysis of these simulations to the ESP team and external groups. Simulate energy systems under different scenarios (e.g., policy changes, technology adoption, or market fluctuations). Conduct forecasting for energy demand and supply, over different time horizons (hours to years).
  • Integrate large datasets into the modeling framework. Gather and validate input data for models, including energy demand, resource availability, market trends, and environmental constraints. Find available market data and translate data into modeling WIS:dom parameters and maintain version control and documentation of changes
  • Automate repetitive tasks and enhance existing workflows to improve modeling accuracy and efficiency
  • Translate complex model outputs into actionable insights for decision-makers, including engineers, project managers, and policymakers.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams, including modelers, developers, analysts, GIS, and transmission analysts to align models with real-world conditions and objectives. Assist development of Pattern mathematical models and simulations of energy systems (WIS:dom modeling suite).
  • Make customizations to WIS:dom branches and assumptions that could impact Pattern business decisions.

Experience/Qualifications/Education Required

ย

Education:

  • Bachelorโ€™s and/or masterโ€™s in electrical engineering, economics, mathematics, or a related quantitative field (power system emphasis desired).

Experience/Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in energy trading, renewables development or energy industry forecasting/analytics/research.
  • High level of understanding of capacity expansion and production cost modeling either commercial (e.g., AURORA, SERVM, RESOLVE, PLEXOS, GE MAPS, PROMOD, UPLAN) or open source (e.g., ReEDs, PyPSA, GenX, TIMES).
  • Familiarity with optimization techniques and algorithms (e.g., linear programming, Monte Carlo simulations).
  • Knowledge of energy systems (renewable and conventional) and grid operations.
  • Ability to work with large datasets, ensuring data integrity and reliability.
  • Strong problem-solving skills for complex energy scenarios.
  • Ability to manage deadlines, coordinate across teams, and handle multiple modeling tasks simultaneously.

Technical Skills:

  • Excellent programming skills in languages commonly used for energy modeling (e.g., Python, GAMS, Julia).
  • Experience with software development best practices (e.g., version control with Git).
  • Familiarity with high performance computing (HPC) environments.
  • Preferred: experience with cloud platforms and large-scale data tools (e.g., Azure, Databricks).

The expected starting pay range for this role is $86,000 - $108,000 USD. This range is an estimate and base pay may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including but not limited to location, work experience, certifications, and education.
