Job description

Join Our Team as an Energy Systems Engineer!

The Role:

We're seeking a motivated and technically strong Energy Systems Engineer to support and advance the product health, reliability, and performance of energy systems used in industrial electric trucks, including battery systems, fuel cells, chargers, and power electronics.

In this role, you'll work across electrical, mechanical, and software engineering disciplines, partnering with cross-functional teams to resolve complex system-level issues, drive continuous improvement, and influence future product designs. We value engineers who bring curiosity, ownership, and a positive, solutions-oriented mindset to technical challenges.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Own and support system-level product health for launched products, including industrial truck power sources (lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells), chargers, and energy-related vehicle hardware.
  • Investigate, analyze, and resolve product issues across the full product lifecycle using mechanical, electrical, and software engineering principles, including advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis (RCA), and corrective action development (CAPA).
  • Recommend and implement design modifications and strategies to improve reliability, performance, cost, warranty exposure, and total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • Address technical topics including:
    • Electrical and mechanical interfaces between truck and power source
    • Controls, communications, and software/firmware (e.g., CAN, CANopen)
    • Energy storage performance, SOC tracking, and cumulative charge tracking
    • System reliability, durability, and robustness
  • Shape sustaining engineering, continuous improvement, and product design strategies through data-driven technical insights.
  • Collaborate closely with product planning, advanced engineering, procurement, field service, test labs, reliability teams, suppliers, and customers in a cross-functional environment.
  • Develop and improve standardized engineering processes, workflows, and data organization to increase efficiency and consistency.
  • Provide technical input to new product development teams, leveraging knowledge of existing products and real-world field performance.
  • Define requirements, develop test plans, perform calculations, and analyze test and field data.
  • Generate and support engineering documentation, including standard work, 5-Why analyses, specifications, test procedures, BOMs, CAD models, drawings, and engineering change requests.
  • Support and/or manage testing of third-party power sources, ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and safety standards (e.g., UL).
  • Design or modify electrical systems and components to meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements.
  • Operate with a high degree of autonomy, making technical decisions that impact cost, reliability, warranty, and customer satisfaction.
  • Communicate technical progress, risks, and priorities to management; may lead small projects or major vehicle subsystems and present status to senior leadership.
  • Occasional (up to 20%) domestic travel.

What We're Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Mechatronics.
  • 5+ years of post-graduation engineering experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or product-based environment.
  • Strong foundation in electrical, mechanical, and software engineering fundamentals, with demonstrated systems-level thinking.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex technical problems and drive solutions from investigation through implementation.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence without formal authority and present technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Self-motivated, team-oriented, and solutions-focused, with a creative and analytical mindset.
  • Interest in energy storage systems, power electronics, control systems, and industrial electric power solutions for material handling equipment.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Master's degree in Engineering or MBA.
  • 10+ years of experience in product engineering, sustaining engineering, or high-urgency issue resolution roles.
  • Hands-on experience with one or more of the following:
    • Hydrogen fuel cell systems
    • Lithium-ion battery systems
    • Industrial trucks or material handling equipment
    • CAN and CANopen communication protocols
  • Experience working directly with customers, dealers, or field service teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Background in development, testing, or sustaining engineering for batteries, chargers, fuel cells, ESS, or related power systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in areas such as:
    • FMEA, RCA, CAPA, DOE
    • Continuous improvement (Kaizen, 5S)
    • Product lifecycle and change management (PLM, configuration control, DfM)
    • Data acquisition, analytics, and product health metrics (DAQ, KPIs, SOH)
    • System diagnostics, design reviews, and V&V
    • UL compliance (UL 2267, 2271, 2580, 583)
    • Experience in large-scale or global manufacturing environments
  • Strong technical judgment, analytical problem-solving skills, and organizational discipline.
