How much do energy planning jobs pay per year?
What is energy planning?
An Energy Planning job involves analyzing energy needs, developing strategies for efficient energy use, and integrating renewable and conventional energy sources. Professionals in this role assess consumption patterns, forecast future demand, and create plans to optimize energy resources while considering sustainability and cost-effectiveness. They often collaborate with policymakers, engineers, and utility companies to ensure reliable and efficient energy systems.
What does an energy planner do?
A typical day in Energy Planning involves a mix of analyzing energy usage data, developing forecasts, and participating in meetings to discuss project requirements or policy impacts. Professionals often collaborate with engineers, sustainability teams, utility representatives, and government agencies to design or optimize energy systems. Responsibilities may include preparing reports, conducting feasibility studies, reviewing regulatory guidelines, and updating stakeholders on project progress. The role is dynamic, balancing desk-based analytical work with interactive team sessions and occasional site visits to assess energy infrastructure. This collaborative, detail-oriented environment is ideal for those who enjoy problem-solving and making a tangible impact on sustainability initiatives.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed for energy planning?
To thrive in Energy Planning, a strong background in energy systems, data analysis, and environmental science is typically required, often supported by degrees in engineering, energy management, or related fields. Familiarity with modeling software (such as HOMER, PLEXOS, or MATLAB), regulatory frameworks, and professional certifications like CEM (Certified Energy Manager) is highly valuable. Effective communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help professionals excel in cross-functional teams and stakeholder engagements. These competencies ensure accurate, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions that are aligned with regulatory and organizational goals.

Job description
Subregional Energy Efficiency Manager (Remote)
Your Role
The Subregional Energy Efficiency Manager (SEEM) plays a critical role in optimizing energy and water efficiency across Digital Realty data center operations within the subregion. Acting as the operational link between corporate sustainability strategy and site-level execution, this role drives measurable improvements in energy performance, supports cost-efficient energy planning, and ensures regulatory compliance while partnering closely with operations, engineering, finance, and customer-facing teams.
What you'll do
- Oversee and manage all aspects of subregional energy and water utility usage across data center operations.
- Lead the implementation of energy and water efficiency strategies, including initiatives to improve PUE and WUE.
- Track, forecast, and analyze energy usage, capacity, efficiency metrics, and costs from a post-sales perspective, including scenario and sensitivity analyses.
- Monitor energy consumption data and implement global initiatives to reduce energy use and improve efficiency.
- Ensure accurate collection, validation, approval, and reporting of energy, capacity, metering, and PUE data in line with global standards.
- Partner with Site Operations, Engineering, DE&C, Solution Engineering, Finance, and Customer Success to support energy planning, billing, and customer usage insights.
- Serve as the primary operational point of contact for energy and infrastructure metering, including monitoring customer overconsumption and escalation where required.
- Provide regular and on-demand energy reporting, including monthly and annual summaries, and approve all energy and PUE reports.
- Support compliance with subregional and local energy regulations, ISO 50001 requirements, audits, and internal energy reviews.
- Lead energy efficiency projects through completion, manage external consultants where applicable, and stay current on industry best practices and emerging technologies.
What you'll need
- 7+ years of experience in mission-critical mechanical and electrical environments, preferably within data centres, IT, or telecoms.
- Bachelor's degree in a technical or engineering discipline, with several years' experience in energy management, sustainability, or environmental engineering.
- Strong knowledge of data centre infrastructure, including UPS systems, generators, cooling systems, and energy metering concepts.
- Experience with energy monitoring, management, and reporting platforms, and the ability to interpret energy data accurately.
- Proven analytical skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable operational and financial insights.
- Ability to read and work with electrical and mechanical diagrams.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including leading cross-functional initiatives and managing change.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to present technical and analytical information to diverse audiences.
- Leadership and people-management capabilities, including coaching, development, and team collaboration (where applicable).
- A proactive, detail-oriented, and results-driven mindset with strong decision-making and stakeholder-management skills.
